Community Engagement Intern Salary Minimum: $12.00 FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt Salary Maximum: $15.00 WORK LOCATION: Sheboygan, WI SHIFT: Tuesday-Saturday (May-August) REPORTS TO: Director of Education and Community Programming JOB STATUS: Part-Time (25 hours per week) REVISION DATE: 1/19/2026 DIRECT REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: N/A Community Engagement Intern (This is a seasonal summer position, May-August 2026/ 12-weeks) At Above & Beyond Children's Museum, our mission is to foster exploration, imagination, and joy through immersive play. The Community Engagement Intern supports our mission by assisting with outreach initiatives, volunteer coordination, event planning, and innovative pilot programs that extend our museum experience beyond our walls. This role includes supporting community partnerships, helping manage volunteer activities, and contributing to the development of engaging programs for diverse audiences. The intern collaborates closely with the Community Engagement Coordinator to strengthen community connections and help bring the magic of play to children and families throughout our region. Your Impact ● Support outreach programs that bring museum experiences directly to diverse community settings ● Help build and maintain our volunteer network, connecting community members with meaningful opportunities ● Contribute to memorable museum events that celebrate creativity, curiosity, and cultural diversity ● Assist with evaluating pilot programs that test innovative approaches to community engagement ● Support efforts to share our museum's story and impact through various communication channels Core Responsibilities Play is Healing Program Administration (50%) ● Provide administrative support for the Play is Healing initiative ● Manage program schedules, materials inventory, and supply preparation ● Coordinate logistics for program implementation at various community sites ● Communicate with program partners and maintain positive relationships ● Track program attendance and maintain detailed records of program participation and impact ● Interact with participants and provide information about ABCM to attendees ● Capture marketing photos and document program activities ● Process program evaluations and feedback forms ● Assist with sourcing new community partners and engagement opportunities ● Help prepare reports on program outcomes and metrics Community Outreach & Events (30%) ● Represent the museum at community events, festivals, and gatherings throughout the summer ● Set up, manage, and break down museum information tables at various venues ● Engage with visitors at outreach events to share information about museum programs and initiatives ● Assist with planning the museum's presence at community events ● Track attendance and engagement at community outreach events Volunteer Coordination (10%) ● Assist the Community Engagement Coordinator with the management of volunteers ● Help with recruiting, training, and scheduling volunteers for community events ● Assist with maintaining volunteer records and tracking systems ● Support the development of volunteer recognition activities ● Help ensure volunteers understand and embody the museum's mission and values Marketing & Communication (10%) ● Assist with creating content for social media, website, and printed materials ● Help document outreach activities through photography and participant stories ● Support efforts to ensure outreach materials are accessible to diverse audiences Strong preference for intern availability for the following dates (flexibility can be offered for time off requests): ○ Play is Healing Dates: 6/12, 6/19, 6/26, 7/10, 7/17, 7/24, 7/31, 8/7 ○ Museum Events: 6/6, 8/8, 8/11 ○ Outreach Events: 5/30, 6/13, 6/20, 6/27, 7/25, 7/26, 8/8, 8/9 Your Superpowers ● Passion for connecting children and families with play-based learning opportunities ● Currently pursuing education in a relevant field (early childhood, elementary education, museum studies, community development, nonprofit management, etc.) or bringing equivalent real-world experience (preferred) ● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail ● Excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills ● Experience or interest in working with diverse communities ● Creativity and enthusiasm ● Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team ● Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment Physical Requirements ● Regular walking, standing, sitting, and moving throughout the museum and community spaces ● Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds ● Working in lively, sometimes noisy environments ● Travel to community sites within the Sheboygan area (reliable transportation required) ● Reasonable accommodations available for qualified individuals with disabilities Learning Opportunities As a Community Engagement Intern, you'll gain valuable experience in multiple aspects of museum operations and community engagement: ● Develop skills in program administration and community relationship building ● Learn strategies for effective volunteer recruitment, training, and management ● Gain hands-on experience in public engagement and outreach ● Understand the logistics and planning involved in community-based programming ● Build skills in data collection, organization, and analysis ● Experience how a mission-driven nonprofit organization operates ● Develop professional communication skills across diverse audiences ● Learn about the unique role of children's museums in community development ● Observe how play-based learning approaches can be adapted for various settings ● Gain insight into nonprofit program evaluation and development Why Join Us?
