Field-Based | Travel Throughout the Southeast (and Beyond)

We are seeking an experienced Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician to join a growing Utility Services team that plays a critical role in reducing risk and improving outcomes for transportation, site development, and infrastructure projects. This position is ideal for a field-driven professional who takes pride in accuracy, safety, and technical excellence.

As a SUE Technician, you will work as part of a tight-knit field team responsible for locating, designating, and documenting underground utilities to support roadway, building, and infrastructure design. Your work will directly contribute to GIS-grade utility mapping, helping municipalities, agencies, and private clients avoid costly conflicts and construction delays.

All tools, equipment, and a company vehicle are provided. While the role is based in the Southeast, there are opportunities to support projects nationwide, including California, Oregon, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. The Utility Services Department is committed to developing talent internally, with training and advancement opportunities for the right candidates.

What You’ll Do
  • Locate and designate underground utilities using GPR, electromagnetic locators, sondes, and related technologies.
  • Perform site investigations to verify, document, and resolve existing utility information.
  • Conduct pair counting, confirm ownership, and identify cable types and sizes.
  • Assist with the operation and maintenance of vacuum excavation (soft-dig) equipment.
  • Apply and document SUE Quality Levels in accordance with industry standards.
  • Read, interpret, and validate utility records, as-builts, and design plans.
  • Work independently in the field and provide leadership and direction to other team members as needed.
  • Perform QA/QC reviews to ensure accuracy and consistency of field data.
  • Coordinate directly with internal teams and on-site clients to communicate findings clearly and professionally.
  • Stay current with evolving SUE technologies, methods, and industry best practices.
  • Support the Group Manager with administrative tasks such as tracking hours, mileage, and expenses.
  • Assist with training field staff and reinforcing company operational and safety standards.
  • Contribute to technical deliverables, including AutoCAD or MicroStation drafting, as needed.
  • Uphold and enforce all company safety policies, protocols, and field procedures.
What You Bring
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of hands-on utility designation or SUE experience.
  • Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain one prior to employment).
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 60%.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and openness to learning new field and data management tools.
  • Background in utility locating, SUE, surveying, utility distribution, blueprint reading, or utility relocation.
  • Prior surveying experience is strongly valued.
Preferred Qualifications
  • UTA Certified Professional certification.
  • Experience working with tablets or iPads for field data collection and documentation.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-intensive role performed outdoors in a wide range of environmental conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, rain, dust, and noise. Work occurs on active construction and project sites and requires a high level of physical capability and situational awareness.

Physical requirements include:

  • Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 lbs, with occasional lifting up to 100 lbs.
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for extended periods.
  • Standing or working shifts of 10–12 hours, as required by project demands.
  • Frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, grasping, and walking.
  • Overtime, weekend work, and overnight travel may be required.
Why Join This Team
  • Professional SUE work that directly supports design and construction risk reduction
  • Company-provided vehicle, tools, and equipment
  • Exposure to high-profile infrastructure and development projects
