Job Description

The Utility Locator III plays a pivotal role in leading and managing a Utility Location and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) field crew. This position requires precise and efficient collection of field data, accurate utility locating, and timely delivery of information to the office. Maintaining detailed records of work performed and associated expenses is a key aspect of this role. The ideal candidate is an analytical problem-solver who is detail-oriented, structured, and safety-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee a Utility Location and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) field crew.
  • Lead field operations with a focus on quality of work, safety, schedule adherence, budget control, and responsive client service.
  • Operate Subsurface Utility Engineering field equipment, including ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic locating equipment, sewer camera systems, probe rods, jackhammers, pneumatic tampers, and vacuum excavation equipment.
  • Ensure all equipment is used in accordance with safety protocols, industry standards, and guidelines.
  • Organize field activities, direct crew members, and accurately collect and document field data.
  • Deliver collected data to the office while maintaining accurate records of work performed and expenses incurred.
  • Travel overnight as required.
  • Perform extensive outdoor work year-round across various terrains and in extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold.

Essential Skills

  • 5 to 10 years of progressive experience in utility locating and Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) field operations.
  • Proficiency with SUE locating equipment, total stations, GPS systems, and vacuum excavation equipment.
  • Some proficiency with ground penetrating radar (GPR) is preferred.
  • Strong technical skills, including subsurface utility engineering, utility locating, surveying, utility designating, total station, GPS, ground-penetrating radar, sewer camera, probe rod, utility relocation, utility plan, and vacuum.

Work Environment

This role involves working in the field with 25-50% travel required, including locations in Houston, Austin, and Louisiana. Out-of-state travel may last up to two weeks at a time. The position entails extensive outdoor work across various terrains and in extreme weather conditions, including heat and cold. Upon permanent employment, benefits include an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and a take-home truck.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Addison, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $34.00/hr.
