Staff Accountant — Houston, TX (Onsite, Contract)

Position Summary

Our Fortune 500 Oil & Gas client is expanding their Houston-based accounting team to support daily financial operations during a period of significant organizational growth and transformation. The team is in the midst of a large-scale SAP S/4HANA implementation, and the client needs experienced contract accountants who can step in immediately to keep day-to-day accounting running smoothly while internal SMEs remain focused on the broader transformation. This is a high-visibility opportunity to join a leading energy organization at a pivotal moment.

Engagement Details

  • 5 days/week onsite in Houston, TX
  • Contract length: 6 months minimum, with potential extension to 12 months
  • Target start date: Early June 2026

Responsibilities

The Staff Accountant will own daily accounting operations across the general ledger, with month-end close as a central rhythm of the role — close periods function as "on-call" time for the team, and reliable execution during this window is critical. Day-to-day work includes revenue and cost accruals, FP&A support, forecasting, cost reviews, journal entry preparation and review, and PowerBI reporting. The accountant will also prepare and review trial balance reconciliations, conduct variance analysis on assigned accounts, and compile daily and monthly reconciliations of production-related figures.

Beyond the close cycle, this role serves as a direct liaison to internal and external auditors on OARs, project work, and quarterly audit engagements. The accountant will review periodic financial statements, audit reports, and management, government, tax, and budget reports; analyze processing errors and coordinate data updates to maintain inventory accuracy; assist with standard cost updates; and respond to information requests from Finance, Audit, and other internal partners. Ad-hoc reporting and continuous improvement of process documentation and internal controls round out the scope.

Required Qualifications

  • Several years of accounting experience at a larger public company (Big Four or notable mid-market+ firm background strongly preferred)
  • SAP experience (non-negotiable — 100% requirement)
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Analytics, Information Systems, or related field
  • Strong Excel proficiency
  • Experience with enterprise ERP environments — candidates whose experience is limited to QuickBooks, Sage 500, or small-business platforms will not be a fit

Preferred Qualifications

  • Oil & gas industry experience (significant advantage) or background in energy/environmental services
  • CPA with 5+ years of experience (for senior-level consideration)
  • SAP S/4HANA and SAP ECC experience
  • Oracle Hyperion Essbase
  • Blackline
  • PowerBI or Tableau
