Position Overview

Under minimal supervision, the Special Assets Officer monitors the workout and OREO portfolio and evaluates loan terms and conditions. You will act as the lead for a designated portfolio, negotiating complex workout agreements with problem borrowers across both commercial and government-guaranteed loan portfolios.

This role requires a high degree of independence and expertise in navigating litigation alongside legal counsel to resolve disputes expeditiously while minimizing expenses. From acquisition to disposition, you will manage OREO properties and ensure strict adherence to requirements for conventional and government-guaranteed loan liquidations, with a specific focus on SBA 7(a) structures.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Workout & Portfolio Management

  • Full Lifecycle Management: Manage all aspects of assigned loans, including past-due payments, foreclosures, litigation, property taxes, and asset liquidation.
  • Bankruptcy Analysis: Monitor and analyze bankruptcy filings to implement strategies that preserve the institution’s position and maximize recovery.
  • Compliance & Reporting: Ensure full compliance with servicing requirements, including the creation of Litigation Plans, Liquidation Plans, and Purchase Guarantees.
  • Asset Classification: Review assigned portfolios for upgrades, downgrades, potential charge-offs, and impaired status. Help prepare watch list and classified asset reports.

Negotiation & Recovery

  • Borrower Relations: Negotiate with distressed borrowers to determine optimal workout options that preserve guarantees and return loans to performing status.
  • Recovery Optimization: Actively monitor previously charged-off loans to maximize subsequent recoveries.
  • OREO Management: Oversee the management of Real Estate Owned properties from the point of acquisition through final disposition.

Compliance & Community

  • Regulatory Adherence: Maintain 100% compliance with internal policies, as well as state and federal banking regulations.
  • Community Impact: Participate in a minimum of 10 compensable CRA volunteer hours per year to support local initiatives.


Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of Commercial Banking experience with a heavy emphasis on Loan Workouts.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field preferred.
  • Technical Expertise: Direct experience with SBA 7(a) Liquidation and Repurchase processes is required.
  • Real Estate Knowledge: Extensive familiarity with real estate terms, market concepts, and valuation.
  • Software Proficiency: Expert knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks in a fast-paced environment.
