Job Title: Crane Service Technician
Job Description

The Crane Service Technician installs, maintains, and repairs hydraulic and electrical systems on industrial truck-mounted cranes and bucket trucks in both shop and field environments. This role focuses on diagnosing issues using laptop-based software, troubleshooting hydraulic and electrical components, and performing repairs from the cab back, including aerials, booms, and pivots. Technicians start in the shop and, as they gain experience, may progress into a higher-paying field service position with road-based work.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose issues on truck-mounted cranes and bucket trucks by connecting laptops, running diagnostic software, and interpreting results to identify faults.
  • Service and repair hydraulic systems, including hoses, cylinders, booms, pivots, and related components on Manitex and IMT cranes and similar equipment.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs on truck-mounted crane systems, including wiring, harnesses, connectors, and control systems.
  • Work primarily on the crane and aerial equipment from the cab back, avoiding chassis, engine, and transmission work.
  • Repair and replace hydraulic hoses and fittings to ensure safe and reliable crane operation.
  • Inspect and service aerial devices and bucket trucks to maintain safe operation and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Use hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment to perform mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams to support accurate troubleshooting and repair.
  • Perform on-the-fly hydraulic and electrical repairs in the field service role, often at customer sites and job locations.
  • Travel in the surrounding states, as needed, for field service work that may require being on the road Monday through Friday.
  • Assemble, adjust, and align crane components and related equipment during repair and service activities.
  • Work in tight spaces and physically demanding positions to access components and complete repairs safely.
  • Use basic fabrication skills and, where applicable, minor welding to support repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Conduct crane inspections and functional tests after repairs to verify proper operation and safety.
  • Collaborate with other technicians and team members to prioritize work, share technical knowledge, and ensure timely completion of service jobs.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on hydraulic experience servicing and repairing crane or industrial truck-mounted equipment.
  • Hands-on electrical experience, including wiring, electrical troubleshooting, and working with harnesses and connectors.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Proficiency in using laptop-based diagnostic tools to identify faults and support troubleshooting.
  • Mechanical aptitude for working on cranes, bucket trucks, aerials, booms, pivots, and related assemblies.
  • Experience with hand tools, power tools, and basic shop equipment used in mechanical and electrical repair.
  • Comfort working on feet for the entire shift in a physically active role.
  • Ability and willingness to work in tight or confined positions to access components.
  • Willingness to travel and work on the road for field service assignments as needed.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills in hydraulics, electrical systems, and mechanical assemblies.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with crane service, crane inspection, or field service on construction or industrial equipment.
  • Background in pneumatics, electronics, and related systems used on industrial trucks or cranes.
  • Familiarity with assembly and fabrication tasks supporting installation and repair of crane components.
  • Minor welding experience or basic fabrication skills, even if not required to start.
  • Experience working in construction, heavy equipment, or industrial maintenance environments.
  • Ability to work independently in the field and manage time effectively while traveling.
Why Work Here?

Join a growing organization that is actively expanding and aiming to double in size over the next two years, creating strong opportunities for advancement and long-term career growth. The company supports a clear development path from shop technician to higher-paying field service roles, including the use of a company vehicle while on the road. Scheduling is structured Monday through Friday with flexibility around family needs, supporting work-life balance while offering exposure to diverse equipment and technical challenges that help you continually build your skills.

Work Environment

The role combines shop-based work with field service assignments. In the shop, you work Monday through Friday, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in a hands-on mechanical and electrical repair environment focused entirely on service and repairs rather than new truck builds. The work involves standing for most of the shift, using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic laptops, and working around industrial trucks, cranes, and bucket equipment. Technicians frequently work in tight or confined spaces on and around the equipment. Field service technicians travel to customer sites in surrounding states, sometimes remaining on the road from Monday through Friday to perform on-the-spot hydraulic and electrical repairs. The overall environment is practical, tool-driven, and focused on safe, efficient service work on heavy equipment.
