Job Title: Sheet Metal Mechanic (HVAC Installer)
Job Description

This role focuses on fabricating, assembling, and installing HVAC duct systems and related equipment on commercial construction projects. You will work from drawings and mechanical plans to lay out, build, and install ductwork and components, operate sheet metal tools safely, and ensure precise fit-up, sealing, and insulation to meet specifications and industry standards. You will collaborate closely with foremen and other trades to maintain project quality and stay on schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, layout, and install HVAC ductwork using galvanized, stainless steel, and aluminum materials on commercial construction projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, mechanical plans, and shop drawings to perform accurate layout and installation.
  • Install rectangular and round duct, offsets, transitions, and fittings, ensuring proper alignment, support, and system performance.
  • Seal and insulate duct systems in accordance with SMACNA standards, seal classes, and airflow requirements.
  • Set and install rooftop units (RTUs), air handlers, VAV boxes, dampers, grills, and registers to code and project specifications.
  • Measure, cut, shear, notch, and assemble sheet metal using both hand and power tools, including Pittsburgh machines, brakes, shears, spot welders, snips, and drills.
  • Perform field takeoffs to verify material needs, coordinate with other trades, and support accurate ordering and installation sequencing.
  • Complete punch-list items, including final adjustments, corrections, and quality checks on duct systems and HVAC equipment.
  • Rig, hang, and support ductwork and equipment safely, ensuring proper plumb, level, and secure attachment to structure.
  • Work collaboratively with general contractors, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical trades to resolve field issues and maintain project schedules.
  • Use lifts, ladders, and rooftop access safely to install duct and equipment in mechanical rooms, ceilings, and exterior locations.
  • Support TAB (testing, adjusting, and balancing) coordination, start-up activities, and change order work when needed.
  • Follow all safety policies and procedures, use required PPE, and maintain a clean, organized work area on active construction sites.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 3+ years of commercial HVAC sheet metal installation experience.
  • Proficiency in fabrication, layout, and installation of ductwork using galvanized, stainless steel, and aluminum materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical plans, and shop drawings accurately.
  • Hands-on experience installing rectangular and round duct, offsets, transitions, and fittings to specification.
  • Strong knowledge of SMACNA standards, seal classes, and basic airflow fundamentals.
  • Proficiency with Pittsburgh machines, brakes, shears, spot welders, snips, drills, and other sheet metal hand and power tools.
  • Ability to rig and hang duct, set HVAC equipment, and align connections to meet code and project specifications.
  • Comfort working on lifts, ladders, and roofs, including mechanical rooms and elevated work areas.
  • Physical ability to lift and move 50–75 pounds as part of daily duties.
  • Basic plumbing-related installation skills, including working with PVC and cast iron where required for HVAC-related scopes.
  • Capability to perform field takeoffs, coordinate installation details, and complete punch-list items independently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Preferred experience supporting TAB (testing, adjusting, and balancing) coordination and HVAC system start-up activities.
  • Preferred experience assisting with or executing change orders in the field.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 safety certification is a plus.
  • Aerial lift certification is highly desirable for work on elevated platforms.
  • Ownership of basic hand tools suitable for sheet metal and HVAC installation work.
  • Reliable transportation to access various commercial job sites.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with foremen and other trades.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to meeting quality standards and project specifications.

Work Environment

You will work on active commercial construction sites, including schools, healthcare facilities, office buildings, and light industrial projects. The role involves both indoor and outdoor conditions, with frequent work on rooftops and in mechanical rooms. You will operate in a team-oriented environment alongside general contractors and other skilled trades such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is required at all times, and you will regularly use lifts, ladders, and a variety of power tools and sheet metal equipment. The work pace is fast and milestone-driven, and you may occasionally work nights or weekends to meet project deadlines.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hampton, NJ.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $37.00/hr.
