Job Title: Sheet Metal Mechanic
Job Description

A well-established mechanical contractor is seeking experienced Sheet Metal Mechanics to support a large, multi-phase commercial project in downtown Charleston. This role focuses on the layout, fabrication, installation, and repair of sheet metal ductwork and HVAC systems, with an initial project duration of 8–10 months and a strong backlog of work projected for the next two years, offering long-term employment potential for qualified candidates.

Responsibilities

  • Layout, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal ductwork and HVAC systems for commercial projects.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, specifications, and construction documents to complete work accurately.
  • Install rectangular, spiral, and architectural ductwork according to project requirements and industry standards.
  • Measure and cut sheet metal and related materials accurately using appropriate hand and power tools.
  • Seal, insulate, and test ductwork in accordance with project specifications and applicable standards.
  • Work safely and efficiently on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding while following all safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Coordinate daily tasks with foremen and collaborate with other trades to meet project schedules and milestones.
Essential Skills
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in commercial sheet metal installation.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction documents, mechanical drawings, and blueprints.
  • Hands-on experience with ductwork installation, including rectangular, spiral, and architectural duct systems.
  • Strong skills in measuring, cutting, and fitting sheet metal using hand and power tools.
  • Familiarity with SMACNA standards and HVAC duct systems.
  • Ability to work safely on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding while adhering to OSHA guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow project specifications and standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.
  • Experience working on large, multi-phase commercial construction projects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with foremen and other trades on active jobsites.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean and safe work area throughout the project.

Work Environment

This role is based at a multi-phase commercial construction project in downtown Charleston at the MUSC Cellular Therapy Building, with parking provided. The schedule runs Monday through Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (four 10-hour shifts), offering a consistent, full-time workweek. Work is performed on an active construction site, frequently on ladders, lifts, and scaffolding, and involves regular use of hand and power tools for sheet metal and ductwork installation. The environment is safety-focused, with adherence to OSHA standards and coordination with multiple trades throughout the project.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charleston, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $32.00/hr.
