JOB SUMMARY:
To be responsible for the operation of a small serving kitchen; to guide, monitor and correct the work of assigned kitchen staff; to receive, pan, and rethermalize food; to perform routine food preparation related to salads, breads, sandwiches, fruits and desserts preparation; to setup the serving kitchen for food distribution; and to clean the serving kitchen and utensils.

SUPERVISION:
Receives supervision from a Nutrition Services Supervisor or a related member of management. Receives work instructions from positions such as Nutrition Services Supervisor.

Exercises technical and functional direction over assigned Cafeteria Workers, Food Worker Trainee and students.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Operates a serving kitchen, including assigning, training and monitoring the work of assigned Cafeteria Workers and student helpers.
• Reports worker and student performance problems to the Nutrition Services Supervisor.
• Receives, inspects, stores and maintains inventory records of foodstuffs and supplies.
• Verifies food and supplies on hand for menu and estimated serving count.
• Pans and rethermalizes food for serving.
• Cuts and slices fruits and vegetables, applies spreads to bread products, assembles sandwiches, mixes salads, cuts food into serving sizes, packages product and performs similar routine food preparation tasks.
• Sets up serving lines and steam tables.
• Ensures proper portion control.
• Serves food to students and staff, endeavoring to make the cafeteria a friendly, hospitable place for students and staff.
• Maintains the appropriate temperature of all hot food stuffs during the entire serving operation.
• Collects and prepares monies for pickup.
• Cleans serving utensils and pans and prepares for return to the central food production center.
• Performs periodic physical inventory of supplies and foodstuffs and reorders as necessary within established limits.
• Ensures the thorough and sanitary cleaning of the food serving kitchen.
• Enforces safety standards.
• Completes a variety of automated and manual record keeping tasks involved with food serving kitchen operations and sales and lunch applications.
• Learns and operates a computer terminal to perform a limited number of repetitive operations and instructs assigned workers and student helpers in the most routine and repetitive functions.
• Advises the supervisor of operational problems and equipment repair problems.
• Tests new products, participates in special marketing studies of food items and distributes program evaluation materials.
• Decorates the serving area of the kitchen with seasonal themes.
• Attends meetings, as assigned.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING:
One year of experience as a cafeteria worker in institutional food service, or the equivalent.

High school graduation or the equivalent.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS:
• ServSafe Certificate, provided by the district within 30-days of appointment.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION:This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 31. Most positions in this class work 6hours/9months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION:

  • Written Examination. WEIGHT: 100%

  • Only qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process.

  • Successful candidates who pass all parts of the examination process will be placed on the eligibility list in order of their relative merit.

  • Candidates will be notified in accordance with the Personnel Commission Rules.

  • This eligibility list will be active for a period of (1) year.
