Are you looking for an internship that will introduce you to the transit industry and provide hands-on, real-world experience? We are currently recruiting for a part-time Intern (up to 20 hours per week) to join our Bus Stop Planning team starting mid-June through September 2026, at our Headquarters in Lakewood.

In this role, you will gain valuable experience working in the public sector while developing foundational skills in transit planning. The selected candidate will support a variety of projects within the Planning department, including data collection, data management, analysis, and bus stop infrastructure planning.

Key responsibilities include

  • Conducting bus stop reviews through route assessments and field visits;
  • Assisting with geodatabase management by updating photos and stop information;
  • Supporting bus stop improvement initiatives
  • Gathering and analyzing data such as ridership, property ownership, and amenity standards;
  • Preparing clear, professional communications for both internal and external stakeholders.

PAID LEAVE:
Under the Washington Paid Sick Leave (WPSL) law, you will be eligible for one (1) hour of WPSL for every forty (40) hours worked, prorated for each pay period you work.

  • Provides support to a department while learning business practices, policies and procedures.
  • Assists in conducting special studies on a diverse range of organizational topics within the agency.
  • Assists in the preparation and presentation of verbal and/or written reports.
  • Interviews and consults with City employees, officials, and interested persons or groups on matters related to work assignments.
  • Assists in performing research for special projects, studies, surveys, and investigations.
  • Assists in the collection, compilation, tabulation, and analysis of information and data.
  • Assists in developing and evaluating management information systems.
  • Assists in the preparation for special events and functions.
  • Demonstrates reliable and consistent attendance.
  • Performs related work as required.

This is trainee-level work of limited duration in which the student provides technical assistance in the administration of a program while enrolled in a vocational school, college or university.Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and
  • Actively enrolled in vocational school, community college, four-year college or university
Desired:
  • Ability to drive agency vehicle
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, ESRI ArcGIS or equivalent.
  • Experience using Access, SQL, Python or other programming languages. Desired area of study, Urban Planning, Geography, Statistics, or related field. Knowledge of transit systems and operations.
Other Requirements:
  • Applicants must be willing to undergo a background check as part of the selection process.
  • This is a part-time position working up to 20 hours per week while college is in session and up to 30 hours when college is not in session.
  • Must be available to work on-site at Pierce Transit and at various locations in Pierce County.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends.

Individuals must pass a background check.

  • Knowledge of modern principles, practices, techniques and methods of public administration.
  • Knowledge of information management systems.
  • Knowledge of research methodology.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and utilizing software.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to plan, organize and implement programs and to write clear, complete and logical reports and proposals.
  • Ability to learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, governmental officials and representatives of private agencies and the community.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, using language that is appropriate to both the complexity of the topic and the knowledge and understanding of the audience.

Physical RequirementsThe position involves sedentary work, such as exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Involves sitting most of the time, with common physical demands involving desk or office related work.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office environment or in the field at various job locations. Operation of Agency outreach vehicle to travel to work locations, job sites or to various meetings is required.Application Instructions
