The City of Salem is hiring for Senior Traffic Engineer!What you will do:As the Senior Traffic Engineer, you will oversee operations of the City’s traffic signals, school zone flashers, and streetlights. In this role you will work closely with the Traffic Signal Supervisor and Assistant Traffic Engineer on long-term planning for the City’s signal system and to advance the City’s goals of a safe and efficient transportation system.
Learn and grow:As part of the Traffic Engineering & Traffic Signals team, you will work closely with the City Traffic Engineer, Assistant City Traffic Engineer, and Signal Supervisor on department leadership, delivering on City priorities, and operating a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation system. This position will provide both leadership and technical growth opportunities through collaboration within the team and other partners across the City.
What you will do:Reporting to the City Traffic Engineer, the Senior Traffic Engineer is the lead engineer for the City’s traffic signal system. This includes project development, project management, and long-term planning for signal related projects. The Senior Traffic Engineer oversees the day-to-day work of the Assistant Traffic Engineer, whose primary focus is implementation of signal timing changes, addressing signal timing issues, and coordination with the City’s Traffic Signal Maintenance Team.
Additional information on job responsibilities:
- Oversee traffic signal operations, including leading efforts to retime corridors to improve safety and efficiency
- Coordination with other agencies, including Keizer, Marion County, and ODOT, on signal maintenance and operations under the Traffic Control Center Grant Agreement
- Coordinate with Engineering on capital projects through design and construction
- Assist Development Services with review of traffic signal elements throughout the development process
- Manage software related to traffic signal operations, including evaluating alternative software, planning for purchases, and managing agreements and contracts for software
- Represent Traffic Engineering at Council, Commission, and Neighborhood Association meetings
- Long-term planning and budgeting for signal system maintenance and upgrades
- Other traffic engineering duties as needed to support department goals and priorities

What are theminimum qualifications?- Must pass the pre-employment background check.
- Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a related field, and ten (10) years of experience in Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related field, or any combination of education, experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions.
- Professional Civil Engineer License (PE) required (or Comity to obtain a State of Oregon license required within one year of appointment to the position).

About us:The Engineering Division is responsible for delivering the 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan and is currently working on a wide variety of capital improvement projects including: water treatment and distribution facilities, wastewater collection and treatment facilities, pump stations, reservoirs, drainage facilities, parks, airport facilities, streets, bridges, traffic and pedestrian signals, and urban development projects. The recent Community Improvement Bond includes capital improvement projects for streets, bridges, parks, building renovations, and new building construction, adding $300 million to the current $280 million Capital Improvement Plan and providing at least 10 years of funded infrastructure to be delivered by our team.
