Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (HVAC)

Location: Charlotte, NC | Hybrid Work Environment

A respected and growing consulting engineering firm is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its Charlotte-based team. This is an opportunity for an experienced HVAC engineer to play a meaningful role in shaping high-performance building systems across a diverse portfolio of commercial, healthcare, institutional, and mixed-use projects.

In this role, you’ll move beyond repetitive project work and instead engage in thoughtful, technically challenging designs from concept through construction documentation. You’ll collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and project leaders in a flexible hybrid environment that values expertise, innovation, and professional judgment.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead the design and development of HVAC and mechanical building systems for a wide range of project types and complexities.
  • Translate concepts into well-coordinated, code-compliant construction documents using AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Contribute technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle—from early design studies through detailed documentation.
  • Collaborate with architects and multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated, efficient building solutions.
  • Apply engineering judgment and creative problem-solving to optimize system performance, constructability, and long-term operation.
  • Support project planning, task coordination, and scheduling to help ensure projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
  • Participate in research, development, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on advancing design quality and best practices.
  • Balance multiple projects while maintaining accuracy, organization, and clear communication.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field).
  • Proven experience designing HVAC systems within a consulting engineering environment.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and working knowledge of Revit/BIM workflows.
  • Solid understanding of building systems, codes, and coordination within MEP or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing collaboratively to team success.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or active progress toward licensure.
  • Experience across multiple building types, rather than a single market sector.
  • Demonstrated interest in innovation, system optimization, and advancing engineering solutions.
Why This Role
  • Hybrid flexibility: Typically in-office one day per week (Wednesdays) to support collaboration and team connection.
  • Project variety: Exposure to diverse building systems and challenges—no narrow or repetitive project focus.
  • Technical respect: A culture that values Senior-level judgment, thoughtful design, and professional growth.
  • Modern tools & collaboration: Work with current CAD/BIM platforms alongside architects and experienced engineers.

This role is ideal for a Senior mechanical engineer who wants to stay technically engaged, influence design outcomes, and work in an environment that values quality over volume.
