Senior Materials Testing Engineer

The Senior Materials Testing Engineer is responsible for leading the design, execution, and analysis of complex materials testing programs. This role ensures accurate, timely, and compliant delivery of test results while supporting customer requirements across aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors. The position also provides technical leadership, mentors junior engineers, and drives continuous improvement in testing methods and laboratory operations.




Key Responsibilities

  • Lead planning and execution of mechanical, metallurgical, and environmental test programs in accordance with industry standards (ASTM, ISO, AMS, NADCAP).
  • Serve as technical authority for materials testing methods such as tensile, fatigue, fracture toughness, hardness, and creep testing.
  • Interpret customer specifications, engineering drawings, and test standards to develop detailed test plans and procedures.
  • Analyze and validate test data; prepare comprehensive technical reports and present findings to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to engineers and technicians.
  • Interface with customers to clarify requirements, troubleshoot issues, and provide engineering support.
  • Ensure compliance with quality systems (ISO 17025, AS9100, NADCAP).
  • Support audits (internal, customer, regulatory) and maintain accreditation readiness.
  • Identify and implement process improvements, automation opportunities, and efficiency gains within the lab.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, quality, and business development teams.




Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 7+ years of experience in materials testing, preferably in aerospace or regulated industries.
  • Strong knowledge of ASTM, ISO, AMS standards and testing methodologies.
  • Experience working in ISO 17025 or NADCAP accredited laboratories.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, failure analysis, and report writing.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing abilities.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with fracture mechanics, fatigue crack growth, or advanced materials characterization.
  • Background in failure analysis and metallurgical investigation.
  • Familiarity with LIMS systems and laboratory automation tools.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or advanced certifications.
