Title: Sr. Accountant

Description:

We are seeking an experienced Accountant III to oversee full-cycle property accounting for a diverse portfolio of real estate assets (commercial and residential). This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial records, timely month-end close, and supporting financial reporting. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented accounting professional with strong real estate experience, capable of managing complex tasks independently while mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities:

Property Accounting: Manage all accounting activities for an assigned portfolio of properties (office, industrial, and residential). Ensure accurate posting of journal entries and maintenance of the general ledger for each property.

Month-End Close: Oversee the monthly close process for assigned properties, including preparing property operating statements, booking accruals, and analyzing budget-to-actual variances for management review.

Financial Reporting Support: Prepare and review schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation for quarterly and annual financial statements and any regulatory filings. Assist with tying out financial statement line items and ensuring compliance with GAAP and company policies.

Review & Oversight: Review work prepared by junior accountants (Accountant I/II level), including lease abstracts, reconciliation schedules, and journal entries, to ensure accuracy and completeness. Provide feedback and guidance as needed.

Lease & Billing Management: Abstract lease terms into the accounting system and verify the accuracy of lease data input. Prepare and review tenant billings, including property tax and operating expense recoveries (CAM charges), and ensure timely and accurate invoicing.

Recurring Entries: Review and post monthly recurring entries and fixed charges (such as rent, depreciation, and amortization) in the ledger.

Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with the Property Management and Collections teams to resolve tenant inquiries, reconcile tenant accounts, and address any discrepancies in billing or payments.

Training & Projects: Mentor and assist in training junior accounting staff. Contribute to special projects, process improvements, or system implementations as needed, bringing a proactive approach to streamline accounting operations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required). CPA license or progress toward CPA is a plus.
  • Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with a strong preference for experience in real estate or property management accounting.
  • Previous experience handling a portfolio of properties or multiple business units is ideal.
  • Software: Proficiency with accounting software; experience with real estate accounting systems (e.g., Yardi or similar ERP) is highly preferred.
  • Technical Skills: Solid knowledge of GAAP and accounting principles. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUPs) and ability to work with large data sets and complex spreadsheets.
