As a Security Officer, you’ll play a critical role in keeping patients, visitors, staff, and UPMC facilities safe and secure—while working a 12-hour shift from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. that allows you to work just 7 days in a 14‑day pay period. That means 7 days off every two weeks, giving you extended time to recharge, focus on family, or pursue personal interests. In this role, you’ll maintain a visible security presence, respond to situations with professionalism and care, and deliver excellent customer service—all while being part of a team dedicated to safety, service, and community. This position is also eligible for a $1,500 sign-on bonus for qualified candidates!
Responsibilities
- Staff fixed posts to monitor ingress and egress to secured areas
- Establish a uniformed security presence by patrolling UPMC hospitals, buildings, grounds, and associated areas to deter criminal activity
- Provide exceptional customer service to patients, families, visitors, and staff to promote a safe and secure environment
- Inspect incoming and outgoing parcels as necessary to prevent theft
- Respond to and help resolve problems, disputes, and unusual circumstances
- Monitor security, fire, and environmental alarms; respond to alarms and assist as necessary
- Contact UPMC Police Officers or other appropriate law enforcement when required
- Assist with traffic control and provide vehicle assistance as needed
- Conduct patient escorts and provide standby details
- Transport deceased individuals to the morgue and release bodies from the morgue in accordance with protocols
- Operate UPMC vehicles in compliance with all applicable state and local motor vehicle laws
- Maintain all required certifications and licensure
- Complete all mandatory training programs per departmental guidelines
- Report and document incidents, suspicious activities, and hazards using appropriate reporting tools
Education, Experience & Core Requirements
Physical & Fitness Requirements
- Must meet physical fitness standards necessary for the role, including full body movement, strength, and stamina sufficient to:
- Respond to crisis interventions
- Assist with medical emergencies
- Perform continuous standing, walking, and other physical demands
- Must successfully pass the UPMC Physical Fitness Standard prior to hire.
- Must meet established audio (hearing) and visual standards.
Licensure, Certifications & Clearances
- New York State Security Guard License (Unarmed) required under Article 7A of the General Business Law.
- Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal History Record Clearance required every 60 months.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required.
- Comprehensive Crisis Management Certification (CCMC) required.
- Successful completion of a required personality assessment prior to hire.
