This position will remain open until filled, with applications being reviewed as we receive them.
The Seasonal Maintenance Worker is responsible for providing routine to semi-skilled maintenance work and/or assisting in specific areas in the Streets, Utilities, and Parks (including Horticulture) divisions.
Work schedule may vary depending on weather, time of year, and student status with the potential to work up to 40 hours per week on a Monday through Friday basis, approximately April through October. General working hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; the City is willing to consider flexible schedule options.
Operate equipment to maintain and drag the City ball fields for daily games and tournaments.
Operate large rotary mowers along with smaller trim mowers and weed whips to maintain the City parks and facilities.
Assist with street maintenance and repairs.
Assist Horticulturist to maintain city gardens, landscaping and plantings with pruning, weeding, watering, mulching, lifting, and digging.
Operate maintenance and irrigation equipment in city landscaping and gardens, including flower baskets, pots, planters, park signs, and monument signs.
Perform forestry duties including tree planting, pruning, weeding, watering, mulching, and tree removal.
Assist with tree inventory (species identification and disease/damage detection) using advanced mobile technology.
Perform janitorial duties throughout the park system, buildings, and grounds, including the pickup/removal of garbage and cleaning of public restrooms.
Assist Utility Maintenance Workers with catch basin cleaning, sanitary sewer cleaning, and gate valve inspections/maintenance.
Work with little or no direct supervision on assigned weekends and holidays.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Valid Driver's License
Ability to lift/move minimum weight of 50 pounds.
Ability to operate or be trained to operate a variety of equipment as mentioned above.
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
Ability to work outdoors for entire shift.
Desired Qualifications
Formal education or practical experience in mowing, turf maintenance, horticulture, landscape maintenance, and irrigation.
Formal education or practical experience in urban forestry, tree maintenance, tree species identification, and disease/damage detection.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Some knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used in general maintenance.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Ability to operate a variety of motorized vehicles and equipment in a safe manner.
Physical strength sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
