Are you passionate about creating safer workplaces and driving meaningful change? We’re looking for a Safety Specialist to play a critical role in advancing safety and occupational health programs at Spurlock Station, our largest power generation facility. This is a highly visible opportunity to partner directly with plant leadership and corporate safety teams to protect employees, ensure compliance, and strengthen a proactive safety culture across the site.

As one of two on-site Safety Specialists, you’ll be a trusted resource and hands-on leader—owning safety initiatives from the ground up and making a real impact every day.

What You’ll Do
  • Champion a strong, proactive safety culture by identifying emerging safety and occupational health risks and implementing preventative solutions.
  • Partner closely with plant leadership, Corporate Safety, and Safety Process Improvement teams to execute site-wide safety initiatives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with local regulatory agencies and ensure compliance with OSHA and industry standards.
  • Conduct safety inspections, audits, and hazard analyses; document findings and recommend corrective actions and best practices.
  • Lead and support incident investigations, injury reporting, and root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Prepare, maintain, and analyze safety records, reports, and regulatory documentation.
  • Review, update, and help author safety policies, procedures, and programs—ensuring clear communication and adoption across the plant.
  • Oversee safety-related programs including medical surveillance, hearing conservation, asbestos abatement, and air monitoring.
  • Conduct plant and field visits to assess machinery, housekeeping, work practices, and environmental conditions (air quality, noise, heat).
  • Recommend engineering controls, administrative controls, and appropriate PPE to mitigate hazards.
  • Develop and deliver engaging safety training for employees and leadership at all levels.
  • Respond to on-site emergencies and coordinate rescue or abatement activities as necessary.
  • Support external organizations through safety presentations, workshops, and training initiatives when needed.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of experience as a Safety Specialist or Safety Manager.
  • Associate degree in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety-related documentation and reporting.
  • Ability to read, write, and implement safety policies and procedures.
  • Medically certified to wear respiratory protection, including dust masks, half masks, PAPR, and SCBA.
  • Experience developing and administering training programs, safety policies, and procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and confidence presenting to large groups, leadership teams, and external stakeholders.
  • Independent problem-solver with the ability to take action and drive improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or a related discipline.
  • Relevant certifications such as CSP, CPR & First Aid, EMT, CLCP, or HAZWOPER.
  • Experience in electrical utility or power generation plant safety.
  • Familiarity with OSHA 1910.269 and electric utility industry safety standards.
Work Environment & Why This Role Stands Out
  • Located at the Spurlock Power Generation Plant in Maysville, KY—the organization’s largest power generation site.
  • One of two on-site Safety Specialists, offering autonomy, visibility, and influence.
  • Strong collaboration with plant management, Corporate Safety, and the Site Safety Council.
