Job Title: Safety SpecialistJob DescriptionThis role involves executing safety and occupational health programs at the Spurlock Station Power Generation plant to ensure a safe, compliant, and healthy working environment. The position requires partnering with plant leadership, corporate safety, and safety improvement teams to implement safety initiatives, train employees, and ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards. The Safety Specialist also participates on the site safety committee, supports incident investigations, manages injury reporting and records, and assists leaders with safety and health-related needs. The overall goal is to create and maintain a strong safety culture for all employees.
Responsibilities
- Promote awareness of potential impacts resulting from emerging safety and health issues.
- Promote awareness of regulatory requirements or best practices in corporate, ethical, and social responsibility.
- Serve as liaison to local regulatory agency representatives.
- Recommend engineering or administrative controls to abate safety or health hazards and suggest the best available Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for employees.
- Maintain records and prepare reports associated with safety and occupational health regulations and standards, including injury and incident reports.
- Review current occupational health and safety policies, procedures, and programs. Recommend changes and participate in writing and communicating revisions.
- Conduct inspections, audits, and analysis related to safety and occupational health. Maintain records of findings and prepare reports suggesting areas of improvement.
- Respond to emergencies in safety and occupational health, coordinating rescue or abatement activities as needed.
- Conduct plant/field visits to ensure effective systems for identifying, assessing, and controlling significant hazards. Examine machinery, housekeeping, and employee tasks. Take measurements of ambient air quality, noise, and heat levels. Recommend methods to eliminate undesirable findings.
- Oversee programs affecting employee safety and health, such as medical surveillance, hearing conservation, asbestos abatement, and air monitoring.
- Prepare, conduct, and facilitate required training classes for management and employees.
- Ensure all safety-related incidents, including injuries, first aid, and near misses, are reported, investigated, and that a root cause is determined with effective action taken to prevent recurrence.
- Stay abreast of current occupational health & safety regulations and requirements to ensure compliance.
- Identify short-term and long-range goals for the occupational health and safety program with consideration for all regulatory requirements.
- May support outside organizations by coordinating, preparing, and presenting programs and workshops or assisting with training activities.
- Effectively and respectfully interact and communicate with all levels of the organization.
Essential Skills- 5+ years of experience as a safety specialist or manager.
- Associate degree in a related or applicable area (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to write and read safety procedures and policies.
- Medically certified to wear respiratory protection, including dust masks, half masks, PAPR, and SCBA.
- Ability to develop and administer specific training programs, policies, and procedures.
- Strong communication skills for speaking to large groups, personnel at all levels, and external stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to take action independently.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Safety or a related field.
- Certifications in CSP, CPR & First Aid, EMT, CLCP, HAZWOPER.
- Preferred experience in electrical utility or power generation plant safety.
- Familiarity with OSHA 1910.269, related to policies and procedures in the electric utility industry.
Work EnvironmentThe position is based at the Spurlock Power Generation Plant in Maysville, KY, the largest power generation site for the organization. The candidate will be one of two safety specialists on-site, acting as the go-to point of contact for executing safety programs and upholding safety procedures across the plant. The role involves on-call responsibilities and may require working weekends, holidays, or after normal working hours as needed. The work environment encourages a strong working relationship with plant management and collaboration with Corporate Safety Process Improvement Teams and the site Safety Council. Internal engineering projects are primarily handled in-house, offering a unique perspective from a utilities standpoint.
