Job Title: Robotic Engineer | Controls Engineer – Robotic Welding and Automation

Job Description

This Robotics/Control Engineer role focuses on supporting, troubleshooting, and enhancing new automation for a high‑volume commercial shelving production line. You will work hands-on with PLCs, robotic welding cells, and HMI systems to optimize performance, improve reliability, and support ongoing expansion of automated equipment within a large manufacturing facility.

Responsibilities

  • Support and modify existing PLC programs to ensure reliable operation of automated shelving production lines.
  • Troubleshoot and debug controls systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and robotic welding cells, to minimize downtime and improve throughput.
  • Program, adjust, and optimize Fanuc robotic welding systems used in sheet metal fabrication and assembly.
  • Collaborate closely with production support teams on the manufacturing floor to resolve equipment issues and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Analyze recurring controls and automation problems and implement improvements to increase safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Assist with the integration and commissioning of new automation equipment and control systems for the new shelving line.
  • Work with electrical and controls engineering documentation, including schematics and programs, to support maintenance and upgrades.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by recommending and implementing enhancements to controls logic, HMI interfaces, and robotic weld processes.
  • Partner with other engineers and technicians to share knowledge, standardize best practices, and support cross-training within the team.
  • Ensure that all controls and automation work adheres to internal standards and applicable safety and quality guidelines.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of robotic welding experience, with flexibility to consider candidates with a minimum of 4 years of strong, relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Fanuc robotics programming for welding applications.
  • Proven PLC troubleshooting experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience in controls engineering with practical experience supporting automated production equipment.
  • Experience with PLC programming and modification for production lines.
  • Experience working with HMI systems for monitoring and controlling automated equipment.

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs or similar industrial control platforms.
  • Experience supporting or integrating welding robotics in high-volume sheet metal manufacturing.
  • Exposure to electrical engineering concepts related to industrial automation and controls.
  • Interest in career growth into leadership roles within engineering or operations.
  • Willingness to participate in career development and educational assistance programs to expand technical and leadership skills.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very large manufacturing facility that produces sheet metal components for commercial shelving units like those used in major retail stores. The building is older but has recently undergone expansion with newly installed automation and production equipment. Engineers spend most of their time on the production floor, working directly alongside production support teams and operators on active projects and real-time troubleshooting. The work environment is described as laid back with a casual dress code and a flexible work schedule. The culture emphasizes internal growth, with clear opportunities to move from engineering roles into leadership positions. While on a contract-to-hire basis, employees receive 6 paid holidays, 3 weeks of accrued vacation, and eligibility for a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage starting on the first day of employment. Upon conversion to direct employment, the benefits expand to include 10 paid holidays, 3 weeks of accrued vacation, a 401(k) with employer match, an Employee Assistance Program, an Educational Assistance Program, structured Career Development Programs, and company bonus potential of up to 5% every six months (up to 10% per year), along with continued first-day eligibility for medical, dental, and vision benefits.
