R&D Productivity Scientist – Ingredient & Formulations (Project Evolve)

📍 Downers Grove, IL

Pay: $32-$50/hr depending on seniority and relevant experience level

🕒 Temporary Contract (up to 6 months, with potential extension based on performance and business needs)


The Opportunity

Join a dynamic R&D team supporting formulation innovation and productivity initiatives across a diverse portfolio of powdered beverages, bars, beverages, capsules, and tablets. As an R&D Productivity Scientist, you will evaluate and test new ingredients in existing formulations to support cost savings, performance improvements, and product optimization.

Working under the guidance of Senior Food Scientists, you will conduct laboratory and pilot-scale testing, assess physical, chemical, nutritional, and sensory properties of ingredients, and support formulation development and scale-up activities. This is a hands-on laboratory role ideal for someone passionate about food science, experimentation, and product development in a regulated environment.

Note: This role involves exposure to common food allergens (including milk, soy, nuts, peanuts, wheat, egg, etc.) and participation in sensory testing, including tasting of various product types.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct analytical testing on raw materials, prototypes, and trial batches (e.g., pH, moisture, texture, bulk density, particle size, flow properties)
  • Prepare lab-scale prototypes and pilot plant batches to support product development and reformulation efforts
  • Support sensory testing activities, including panel preparation, coordination, and data collection
  • Document experimental procedures, results, and observations in lab notebooks and internal systems
  • Assist in reviewing and completing ingredient specification documentation in collaboration with QA, procurement, and R&D teams
  • Support ingredient weighing, batching, blending, and sample preparation for lab and pilot-scale work
  • Handle, organize, and track raw materials in accordance with formulation and safety guidelines
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and functionality of laboratory equipment and workspaces
  • Participate in technical discussions, team meetings, and project reviews


Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, or related field preferred
  • 1–3 years of experience in a food, beverage, or dietary supplement laboratory or production environment
  • Familiarity with laboratory techniques and product development processes
  • Understanding of GMP and laboratory safety standards
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent documentation and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, hands-on R&D environment with multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with SAP or formulation/PLM systems a plus
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
