The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Registered Nurse Supervisor A, a key leadership role within the institution’s medical department. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the delivery of quality healthcare services within a correctional environment while supervising nursing staff and maintaining compliance with medical policies, procedures, and professional standards.

The Registered Nurse Supervisor A will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the daily activities of nursing staff, ensuring adequate staffing coverage, reviewing medical documentation, and assisting in the implementation of medical policies and procedures. The incumbent will work closely with physicians, medical staff, security personnel, and administration to ensure that healthcare services are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with departmental regulations and professional nursing standards.

This position requires strong leadership, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to work in a structured and secure environment. The Registered Nurse Supervisor A will also assist in training and mentoring nursing staff, monitoring performance, ensuring proper documentation and medication administration practices, and responding to medical situations that arise within the facility.

Possession of a current Louisiana Registered Nurse license or a temporary permit or multi-state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state to practice as a registered nurse plus one of the following:

Three years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A bachelor's degree in nursing plus two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A master's degree in nursing or public health plus two years of experience as a licensed registered nurse; OR

A doctorate in nursing or public health plus one year of experience as a licensed registered nurse.The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here.

Job Duties:

  • Supervise Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, paraprofessional staff, and inmate workers
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for assigned nursing staff
  • Provide hands-on support for complex procedures and specialized equipment
  • Assign duties based on staff competency, licensure, and Louisiana State Board of Nursing guidelines
  • Coordinate patient care activities, including admissions, discharges, transfers, and scheduling of tests/procedures
  • Ensure compliance with hospice policies, procedures, and licensing standards
  • Conduct regular rounds on Nursing Units I & II to monitor adherence to professional and organizational standards
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions as needed
  • Manage staff communications, including calls related to absences, tardiness, and reporting requirements
  • Maintain accurate documentation of staffing issues and related reports


Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type:PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Compensation:This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $39.12 per hour. There is alsoPremium Pay rate up to $5.00 per hour for each hour worked based on years of service with DOC, in addition to regular pay.
