Refrigeration Mechanic

Pay Rate: $28.00/hour
Shift Structure:

  • Training: 4–8 weeks on Shift 1 (6:00 AM – 4:00 PM)
  • Permanent Assignment: Shift 2 (6:00 PM – 6:00 AM)
Job Summary

The Refrigeration Mechanic is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and industrial refrigeration systems, including ammonia-based systems. This role ensures equipment reliability, operational safety, and compliance with GMP, OSHA, and EPA standards while supporting continuous plant operations.

Essential Functions
  • Ability to work scheduled shifts, assigned hours, and required overtime
  • Maintain consistent attendance to meet production demands
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and technical plans
  • Apply Planned Maintenance principles
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills
  • Organize, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Apply intermediate math skills
  • Use basic computer applications, including spreadsheets
  • Complete work orders and purchase requests accurately
  • Safely lift and move up to 75 lbs
Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and repair HVAC and refrigeration systems, including ammonia and other refrigerants, in compliance with safety standards
  • Perform daily inspections and operational checks on all refrigeration systems and equipment
  • Lead and support the refrigeration team in task execution and issue resolution
  • Repair or replace boilers, ammonia systems, compressors, coolers, and HVAC equipment
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance on evaporators, condensers, and related systems
  • Clean and replace filters according to maintenance schedules
  • Monitor, clean, and repair plant systems (condensers, traps, filtration systems, etc.)
  • Requisition parts and supplies as needed
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas following company procedures
  • Complete all required documentation, logs, and checklists accurately and on time
  • Assist with machinery, wiring, piping repairs or modifications
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Advanced refrigeration and HVAC troubleshooting skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to identify and resolve issues independently
  • Knowledge of plant safety policies and GMPs
  • Familiarity with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
  • Ability to obtain or maintain certifications, including:
    • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
    • Powered Industrial Truck (PIT)
    • Confined Space Entry
    • Respirator use
    • HAZMAT training and team participation
Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of refrigeration maintenance or related experience
  • Commercial HVAC experience required
  • Industrial refrigeration experience preferred
