Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Recreation Leader. This position implements and coordinates a variety of recreational programming throughout the city, including scheduling, advertising, and evaluating programs. Coordinates recreation programs, leagues and camps. Provides customer service to patrons.
Ideal Candidate
The City is seeking a community minded Recreation Leader to support operations and programming at Floyd Lamb Park. The ideal candidate is someone who thrives in a nontraditional recreation environment that blends outdoor park stewardship with high quality event execution. The successful candidate will be able to manage staff schedules, coordinate logistics, and ensure smooth daily operations in a park setting that includes public access, special events, and unique environmental considerations. They will have experience supervising and supporting hourly staff, setting clear expectations, communicating effectively, and fostering a positive, accountable team culture aligned with the City’s values of being kind, committed, and smart. This person will also serve as the point of contact for events of varying scale, anticipating needs, adapting quickly, and maintaining a calm, professional presence in a fast-paced outdoor environment. The role requires someone willing to jump in wherever needed, including event setup and breakdown, with the ability to lift and move equipment, work outdoors in varying conditions, and adjust to shifting priorities. An appreciation for the unique character of Floyd Lamb Park is essential, along with a motivation to create meaningful experiences for visitors while helping preserve and respect this historic space. This position will be assigned to the Special Events Division and work at Floyd Lamb Park however future vacancies may be filled from this list for other divisions including the Active Adult or Recreation Division.
Type of Examination
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date.The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the full journey level class within the Recreation Leader series. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit or facility.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives general supervision from the assigned Recreation Coordinator or higher level supervisory or management staff. May receive functional and technical supervision from Senior Recreation Leader.
Essential Functions
Experience/Training
*In the above criteria, related field may include, but is not limited to, general education, sociology, geriatrics, psychology, parks & recreation, leisure studies, sports management, kinesiology, business management, and public administration.
Licenses and Certifications
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is required on date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.
Special Requirements
Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
