Recreation Director I positions in District I (East Honolulu - Ka Iwi
to Waikiki),District II (
West Honolulu - Makiki to Aiea), District III (Leeward Oahu - Waipahu to Makaha), and District IV (Windward Oahu - Mokuleia to Makapuu)! This is an entry-level (trainee) position where you will learn the basics of professional recreation work.
What You'll DoUnder close supervision, you will:- Learn the principles and techniques of planning, organizing, instructing and directing recreational activities such as music, dance, creative drama, arts and crafts, sports and fitness, games and other selected activities.
- Assist in maintaining discipline and order at playgrounds and during recreational programs.
- Learn and apply methods to plan, organize and supervise special activities, such as picnics, camps, hikes, parties and “finale” programs.
- Learn and apply methods to recruit and maintain the support of volunteers from the community to assist with recreation programs and special events.
- Assist in organizing and advising special interest clubs (i.e. teen, senior citizens, etc.)
- Attend meetings, conferences, training courses and workshops as assigned.
- Enforce department rules and regulations and assists public in interpreting them.
- Inspect facilities and equipment and requests repairs as needed.
- Perform other assignments related to the position.
Special Work Requirements- May be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Will serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.
Career Progression- The expectation for any Recreation Director in this department is to learn and progress upward to higher levels.
- Opportunity to progress up the career ladder and/or qualify for other higher level positions will depend onsatisfactory work experience and demonstration of applicable knowledge and skills. The upper IV and V levels are competitive promotional opportunities.

Students who will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in the current Spring 2026 semester may apply. However, you must submit an official document verifying graduation from an accredited four-year college of university with a Bachelor's degree in order to be hired. Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree.
For example:1. Four (4) years of professional work experience, in any occupation, may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional level experience) in
recreation may substitute for a general bachelor's degree.
The education requirement must be met at the time of application unless otherwise noted. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided. LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT:
Prior to appointment,possession of a valid:- Appropriate driver's license (Type 3/automobile).
Prior to completion of probation,possession of a valid:- American Red Cross First Aid Certificate or equivalent.
- American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult, Child, and Infant CPR and AED Certificate, to include care for choking and obstructed airway, or equivalent.
- DPR van certificate as required.
