Job Title: Quality Engineering Manager – Pressure Vessel Manufacturing

Job Description

This role leads the quality function for a pressure vessel manufacturing operation, owning the Quality Management System and ensuring full compliance with ASME, AWS, ISO 9001, and applicable piping codes. The Quality Engineering Manager drives continuous improvement of quality processes, oversees inspection and testing activities, and partners closely with production to ensure welding and fabrication meet all regulatory and customer requirements. This position combines hands-on shop floor engagement with strategic quality planning, root cause analysis, and leadership of a multi-department quality team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s Quality Management System to ensure compliance with ASME, AWS, ISO 9001, and applicable piping codes.
  • Maintain and continuously improve the Quality Control Manual and all associated procedures to align with current codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Ensure proper implementation and adherence to Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) across all relevant manufacturing and fabrication processes.
  • Lead root cause investigations for nonconformances, defects, and customer quality issues, using structured problem-solving methodologies.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to eliminate recurring issues and strengthen process controls.
  • Ensure all welding and fabrication activities meet ASME and AWS requirements, including code compliance for pressure vessels and related components.
  • Oversee and support the development, qualification, and maintenance of Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
  • Manage and provide leadership to a quality team of approximately 30 employees, including 4 department leads, offering guidance, coaching, and performance support.
  • Collaborate closely with production, engineering, and other departments to embed quality requirements into daily operations and long-term planning.
  • Monitor quality performance metrics, identify trends, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance product reliability and customer satisfaction.
  • Conduct or oversee internal audits and readiness activities to maintain compliance with ISO 9001 and other applicable standards.
  • Regularly walk the shop floor (at least once per day) to observe processes, verify compliance, and engage with production teams on quality topics.
  • Support customer and third-party inspections, audits, and reviews, ensuring accurate documentation and timely resolution of findings.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience in quality engineering within a pressure vessel manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME pressure vessel codes, including ASME Section VIII and ASME Section IX.
  • Hands-on experience with quality engineering, quality control, and quality assurance in a manufacturing setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in root cause analysis and structured problem-solving for nonconformances and defects.
  • Practical experience developing and implementing corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) and corrective action plans.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 requirements and their application in a manufacturing Quality Management System.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with AWS requirements for welding and fabrication activities.
  • Experience with PQR (Procedure Qualification Records) and WPS (Welding Procedure Specifications).
  • Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) credential.
  • Proven leadership skills with experience managing and supporting a team, including multiple department leads.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams and interact with auditors and customers.
  • Ability to work both strategically on systems and tactically on the shop floor.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • BS or AS degree in Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in pressure vessel manufacturing and related fabrication processes.
  • Familiarity with ASME Section VII and XI is beneficial.
  • Experience working with or maintaining ISO 9001-certified Quality Management Systems.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.
  • Ability to influence and drive continuous improvement initiatives across multiple departments.
  • Comfort with documenting procedures, reports, and investigation findings clearly and accurately.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $62.00 - $64.90/hr.
