Quality Control Laboratory Technician

Job Description

Perform a variety of technical research, development, and tests on products and samples within the Protective & Marine Coatings Powder Coatings Laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze basic formulas, perform calculations, and prepare and test a range of technologies and methods.
  • Prepare a variety of coatings based on experimental formulas, including using and maintaining equipment for mixing, application, laboratory testing, and development.
  • Maintain an organized lab notebook.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and safe working environment in the lab.
  • Prepare a variety of samples (paints, panels, parts, etc.) and materials to support product design activities specific to powder coatings.
  • Match and adjust powder coating samples to meet existing colors and design new ones.
  • Perform a range of tests and analyses based on project requirements.
  • Complete appropriate forms and documentation regarding research and development processes, tasks, results, and conclusions.
  • Perform various calculations to prepare samples and perform tests and analyses.
  • Clean, maintain, and calibrate most forms of equipment and maintain a clean and safe working environment.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math field.
  • Practical understanding of spectral measurement data.
  • Computer knowledge for basic inputting, communication, and data analysis.
  • Analytical chemistry knowledge with the ability to extend it beyond the realm of coatings.
  • Experience in powder coatings, including polyester, epoxy/hybrid, and FBE technologies.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of epoxy-based or industrial coating experience.
  • Familiarity with application and troubleshooting of industrial coatings.
  • Experience interfacing with Sales, Technical Service, and Customers.
  • Proven good organization and documentation skills.
  • Proven ability to take direction.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Work Environment

Support technical research and development of powder coatings. Responsibilities include preparation and application of paints and coatings and general research methods used to test and evaluate paints and coatings. Work directly with a Chemist/Scientist to receive instruction on processes. The role typically involves an 8-hour shift from Monday to Friday, starting between 7/8 AM and ending at 4/5 PM. The dress code is business casual, with a lab coat provided. This role offers an opportunity to prove oneself as a top technician to secure a full-time position, with some roles being contract-to-hire.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $30.00/hr.
