About the Role

We are seeking a clinically resilient and detail-oriented Psychologist to join our mental health team at the Richard A. Handlon Correctional Facility. Working within a state prison requires a unique blend of clinical expertise and operational awareness. You will be responsible for the mental health lifecycle of our population—from initial intake and crisis intervention to specialized therapy and parole board evaluations.

This role is ideal for a clinician who thrives in a highly structured environment and is passionate about providing high-quality psychological care to an underserved population. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure that mental health needs are met with dignity, safety, and clinical rigor.

What You’ll Do

  • Diagnostic Evaluations: Perform comprehensive psychological testing and evaluations for suicide risk, segregation screenings, and parole board requests.
  • Evidence-Based Therapy: Deliver individual and group sessions, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and specialized programs such as Assaultive Offender Therapy.
  • Crisis Management: Act as a first responder for acute psychological crises, providing emergent interventions and determining the necessary level of care.
  • Multidisciplinary Planning: Participate in treatment team meetings with medical staff and custody officers to coordinate care and ensure patient stability.
  • Involuntary Treatment Panels: Participate in hearings and panels (per the Michigan Mental Health Code) to determine the need for involuntary treatment or hospitalization.
  • Re-entry Support: Assist in "Needs Assessments" for prisoner re-entry, ensuring continuity of care as individuals transition back to the community.

Who you are

  • Resilient Clinician: You are comfortable working within a correctional facility and understand the importance of maintaining clinical boundaries while ensuring safety.
  • Master of Documentation: You recognize that in a state facility, your reports (Parole Board, Misconduct Responsibility, etc.) carry significant weight and must be meticulously drafted.
  • Mission-Driven: You believe in the power of rehabilitation and want to contribute to the transformative programs offered at the Handlon facility.

Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s Degree in Psychology from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Active Psychologist license in good standing with the State of Michigan (LARA). Master's Limited License (LLP) or Temporary Limited License (TLLP) is acceptable.
  • Certification: Active BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a correctional, forensic, or high-acuity inpatient setting is preferred.
  • Screening: Must be able to pass a rigorous background check (LEIN) for facility access.
