Protection & Controls Engineer (Mid‑Level)

Position Overview

We are seeking a mid‑level Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer to support the design, modification, and implementation of protection and control systems for high‑voltage substations. This individual will work closely with senior engineers, designers, and project teams to deliver safe, reliable, and standards‑compliant substation designs for utility and industrial clients.

The ideal candidate has hands‑on experience with P&C schematics, wiring diagrams, relay logic, and protection philosophies, and is comfortable working in a fast‑paced engineering environment supporting substation upgrades, expansions, and greenfield projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and modify protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for transmission and distribution substations
  • Prepare relay protection diagrams, AC/DC schematics, elementary diagrams, and point‑to‑point wiring drawings
  • Support the application and coordination of protective relays (line, transformer, feeder, bus, breaker failure, etc.)
  • Assist with relay settings, logic development, and protection coordination studies
  • Collaborate with physical substation engineers to ensure accurate interface between P&C and physical designs
  • Interpret and apply utility standards, IEEE/ANSI standards, and project specifications
  • Review vendor drawings, relay logic diagrams, and equipment submittals
  • Support construction packages, RFIs, redlines, and as‑built documentation
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality control checks
  • Coordinate with project managers, field teams, and clients as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • 3–7 years of experience in protection and control engineering for substations
  • Experience developing P&C schematics and wiring diagrams for HV substations
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical
  • Working knowledge of protective relays and substation protection philosophies
  • Familiarity with industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, NESC)
  • Strong communication and documentation skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Substation Design Suite (SDS – Protection & Control)
  • Exposure to ETAP or PSCAD for load flow, short circuit, or protection studies
  • Experience using relay manufacturer software (SEL, GE, ABB, Hitachi Energy, etc.)
  • IEC 61850 knowledge or project exposure
  • Utility, EPC, or consulting engineering background
  • PE license or progress toward licensure (preferred, not required)

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Atlanta, GA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $120000.00/hr.
