The Property Maintenance Inspector is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $23.93 - $26.33 per hour (equivalent to $49,774 - $54,766 annually);however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy.

In this role, you'll havethe opportunity to help protect the safety and integrity of properties throughout the City by conducting on-site inspections and re-inspections, investigating complaints and concerns related to property maintenance and code compliance, and working directly with property owners, renters, contractors, and the public to resolve issues involving existing structures, buildings, and properties. You will document inspection findings, prepare notices and correspondence, maintain accurate records and reports, and apply the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC), City Code, and other applicable regulations with sound judgment and professionalism. This position also calls for a proactive approach, strong communication skills, and the ability to navigate enforcement matters independently while collaborating with supervisors, the Building Official, legal counsel, and other City staff as needed.

  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by coursework in a variety of construction inspection specialties (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, property maintenance, etc.) or related field, and moderate (1-3 years) experience in one or more of the building construction trades, building or zoning inspections. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.

Required After Hire Date:
  • Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD) as a Property Maintenance Inspector, or the ability to obtain the certification within eighteen (18) months of hire.
Successful applicants for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
  • DMV record check;
  • Education history/certification verification; and
  • Criminal background check.
