Job Title: Project Engineer

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of experience in field engineering and documentation for geotechnical, civil, or commercial construction projects.
  • At least 3 years of experience working with construction materials such as soil, gravel, clay, and grout.
  • At least 3 years of experience preparing reports for geotechnical, construction, or civil field activities on active construction sites.
  • Proficiency in interpreting and utilizing construction plans and specifications.
  • Ability to perform and document field quality control tests and basic field surveys.
  • Experience with geotechnical and earth retention work such as drilling, grouting, soil anchors, rock anchors, earth retention systems, soil compaction, foundations, and related activities.
  • Strong documentation skills for construction inspection, construction observation, and construction materials testing support.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft programs for project reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to manage materials, inventory, and purchase orders in a construction environment.
  • Capability to lead small crews and coordinate technical field work safely and efficiently.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with construction materials testing, including coordination with testing laboratories.
  • Familiarity with project submittal processes, project takeoffs, and estimating.
  • Experience with projects involving reinforced concrete, rebar installation, and concrete testing.
  • Experience with grout applications, augercast piling, micropiles, and soil borings.
  • Geotechnical or civil specialized construction projects.
  • Interest in developing project management skills by working closely with a Project Manager and Superintendent.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly for project assignments, including multi-week stays at project sites.
  • Residence in West Michigan is beneficial for supporting both local and traveling projects, though not required.

Job Description

The Project Engineer supports geotechnical construction projects by providing high-quality field engineering, documentation, and reporting, while assisting Superintendents and Project Managers with day-to-day project execution. This role focuses on projects involving foundation anchor systems, drilling, grouting, load testing, and other earth retention applications. The position combines office-based documentation and planning with hands-on field work and frequent travel to project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate reporting and documentation for onsite construction activities involving drilling, grouting, testing, and other geotechnical and earth retention work.
  • Interpret and apply construction plans and specifications to support field operations and ensure work follows design requirements.
  • Identify and communicate drawing interpretation problems or errors and assist in resolving discrepancies.
  • Work with and understand various construction materials, including soil, gravel, silt, clay, sand, grout, and concrete.
  • Use Microsoft software and other technology tools to prepare project reports, maintain documentation, and track project data.
  • Lead and run small field crews performing technical work such as water testing, load testing, and related field activities.
  • Perform field quality control tests and basic field surveys to verify work quality and compliance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate with local testing companies to schedule and review field testing activities.
  • Manage materials and inventory, including tracking quantities and overseeing purchase orders.
  • Assist with project management tasks such as preparing and processing change orders, submittals, requests for information (RFIs), and other project documentation.
  • Support bid submittals, plan reviews, and documentation required for project proposals and ongoing work.
  • Contribute to material management and limited marketing-related documentation as needed for projects.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wayland, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $34.00/hr.
