Job Title: Project Engineer – CAPEX (Chemical Manufacturing)
Job Description

The Project Engineer will lead capital improvement projects at a key chemical manufacturing site that produces additives used in plastics, rubber, batteries, flame retardants, and other industrial applications. This role plans, develops, and executes capital projects from initial concept through final completion while managing an annual capital budget of approximately $1–1.25 million. The Project Engineer works cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, finance, and external contractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and aligned with organizational goals.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, scope, and prioritize capital projects based on operational needs, asset condition, and strategic objectives.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, cost estimates, return-on-investment analyses, and risk assessments for proposed projects.
  • Develop project charters, preliminary designs, and capital funding requests to support project approvals.
  • Lead projects from initiation through detailed design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed project schedules, budgets, and resource plans to ensure timely and cost-effective execution.
  • Manage contractors, vendors, and engineering consultants, ensuring adherence to specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
  • Oversee procurement of materials, equipment, and services in accordance with company policies and project needs.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to monitor construction progress, quality of work, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Manage an annual capital budget of approximately $1–1.25 million, ensuring effective allocation of funds across projects.
  • Track project costs, approve invoices, and maintain accurate financial documentation and cost records.
  • Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality, reliability, or safety.
  • Prepare and present clear project updates, status reports, and recommendations to leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Maintain thorough project documentation, including project plans, change orders, risk logs, and closeout reports.
  • Coordinate closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure smooth integration of new equipment and systems into existing processes.
  • Support the transition and installation of new manufacturing equipment as the site adds multiple new pieces of production equipment.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (such as Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial, or a closely related discipline).
  • 3–10 years of experience working in a chemical manufacturing environment.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing capital projects with individual project spend up to approximately $3 million.
  • Strong project management and project engineering skills, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and execution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cross-functionally with project engineering teams, process engineering teams, operations, maintenance, and outside vendors.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar design tools for developing and reviewing engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications for documentation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines and budget targets.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in wet-based chemical manufacturing environments is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with equipment such as batch systems, kilns, burners, boilers, milling systems, extrusion equipment, and dryers.
  • Experience coordinating with external engineering consultants and contractors on industrial projects.
  • Ability to present technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Interest in long-term growth within a chemical manufacturing organization, including potential conversion from contract to full-time employment.
  • Capability to support and lead capital projects tied to plant expansion and installation of new manufacturing equipment.
Work Environment

This is a full-time, first-shift, salaried exempt position based at a chemical manufacturing facility. Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with an average workweek of approximately 48 to 52 hours. The role splits time between office and plant environments, with roughly 50% of the work performed in an office setting and 50% on the manufacturing floor. The plant environment includes exposure to typical chemical manufacturing conditions and production equipment. The position offers the opportunity to lead significant capital projects at a key production site and to support the installation of new manufacturing equipment. Paid time off is available during the contract-to-hire period.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $95000.00 - $125000.00/hr.
