Job Description

The Project Designer supports the housing department by designing, managing, and producing architectural documents and materials. This role works closely with Project Architects and Project Managers, contributing to all phases of project development, from site documentation and design to construction documents and client coordination. The position offers an opportunity to grow within a nationally recognized, multidisciplinary design practice focused on education, housing, and workplace projects, with a core mission to positively impact lives through meaningful design.

Responsibilities

  • Design, manage, and produce architectural materials and construction documents for housing projects.
  • Prepare and develop architectural drawings, details, and drafting work in alignment with project standards and design intent.
  • Assist the Project Architect and Project Manager during client meetings by taking detailed notes, preparing agendas, and assembling handouts and presentation materials.
  • Coordinate with consultant teams by scheduling meetings, sharing updated backgrounds, and ensuring all parties have the information needed to perform their work.
  • Conduct site visits to document existing buildings and conditions, including measurements, photographs, and field notes, and incorporate findings into project documents.
  • Support the development of interior design concepts and renderings as needed for project presentations and client approvals.
  • Contribute to the preparation of construction drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, and schedules.
  • Assist with miscellaneous office management and administrative activities that support smooth project and studio operations.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including architects, interior designers, engineers, and planners, to deliver coordinated project solutions.
  • Maintain organized project files, digital models, and drawing sets to support efficient project workflows.
Essential Skills
  • Possess a 4-year or 5-year degree from an accredited program in Architecture.
  • Designer I: 0–3 years of architectural experience, or Designer II: 4–6 years of architectural experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience working as a project designer in an architectural setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in architectural design and production of construction documents.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit for design and documentation.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for drafting and construction drawings.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop for graphics, presentations, and visual communication.
  • Ability to produce accurate construction drawings and architectural details.
  • Strong skills in architectural drafting and documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for client and consultant coordination.
  • Ability to organize and document site visits and existing conditions accurately.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience using SketchUp for 3D modeling and design visualization.
  • Experience with rendering techniques and tools to support project presentations.
  • Exposure to or interest in interior design as part of integrated project delivery.
  • Interest in working on education, housing, and workplace design projects.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team that includes architecture, interior design, structural engineering, landscape architecture, graphic design, planning, and civil engineering.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in both design and documentation.
  • Interest in contributing to a mission-driven practice focused on positively impacting lives through meaningful design.
Work Environment

This role is based in an office environment within a collaborative, multidisciplinary design firm of more than 120 professionals. Team members work closely with colleagues in architecture, interior design, structural engineering, landscape architecture, graphic design, planning, and civil engineering. The position involves regular use of design and documentation software such as Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, and SketchUp, as well as standard office productivity tools. Work is primarily performed in a professional studio setting, with occasional site visits to document existing buildings and conditions. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Rochester, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $28.84 - $38.46/hr.
