We facilitate the safe and reliable transport of power through detailed system studies, physical design, and field execution. Our design team is responsible for producing high-quality construction packages for a diverse range of power systems.
Our services include:
- High Voltage Substation Design – Physical layouts (GAs), elevations, grounding grids, and lightning protection for outdoor substations.
- Power Distribution – Low and Medium Voltage (LV/MV) system design, including equipment sizing, conduit/cable routing, and plot plans.
- Protection & Control (P&C) – Development of relaying schemes, breaker control schematics, and wiring diagrams for various protective devices.
- Renewable Energy – E&I design for Solar, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
Job Description
The Project Controls Specialist (PCTL) reports to the Project Manager or Operations Manager. This role is responsible for the ‘science’ of project delivery; ensuring that our engineering and field service projects remain on schedule and within budget. You will support cost estimating, scheduling, and performance tracking, acting as the data driven backbone of our project teams.
Typical tasks include:
- Cost & Budgeting – Support cost estimating and budgeting activities. Assist in preparing forecasts and help present financial data clearly to the project team.
- Planning & Scheduling – Provide input on scheduling activities and help solve day-to-day project challenges to keep field and engineering teams on track.
- Financial Performance – Review project financial information, including progress reports and budgets, to track performance against project baselines.
- Project Coordination – Assist with general administrative tasks and information gathering to support project discussions, negotiations, and internal organization.
- Contract & Scope Review – Help review contracts to understand project scope, costs, and basic project controls requirements to ensure compliance.
- Risk & Change Management – Participate in risk management activities. Help track risks and mitigation actions while coordinating with change management and cost-tracking processes.
Job Qualifications
- Experience – 2 to 5 years of experience in project controls, cost engineering, or project coordination, preferably within the electrical, construction, or energy sectors.
- Education – Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Business, Engineering, or a relate field is preferred. Equivalent experience in project-heavy industries will be considered.
- Analytical Proficiency – Strong ability to identify issues related to cost or scheduling and work with the team to find practical, data-driven solutions.
- Technical Tools – Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced) and exposure to scheduling software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6, BQE Core).
- Collaborative Mindset – Ability to work with and learn from senior team members while beginning to support and guide junior staff or administrative support.
- Work Authorization – Must have the legal right to work in the United States. Root 3 Power does not provide immigration or work visa sponsorship.
- Professional Competencies – Strong work ethic and a ‘team player’ attitude.
- Ability to follow complex financial or scheduling data in a clear, digestible format.
- High level of integrity when handling project financial data and contract information
Work Environment
- Site Access – Ability to pass drug/alcohol screening and background checks as required by industrial client sites.
- Reliability – Consistently arrive at meetings and appointments on time. Ensure work responsibilities are covered when absent.
- Language – Must be able to speak, write, and understand English to follow complex procedures and generate accurate test reports.
