Job Title: Production Technician / General Operator
Job Description

This role supports agricultural seed production in a fast-paced, highly physical environment. You will operate production and field equipment, handle and package seed, and perform a variety of seasonal tasks that keep the plant running safely and efficiently. Work assignments change with the season and business needs, and you will rotate through different duties, including machine operation, box washing, packaging, warehousing, and housekeeping. The position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate production and field equipment, ensuring all activities meet quality standards and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Rotate through various roles within the production area, which may include control room duties, machine operation, sorting, drying, quality control, bagging and re-bagging, palletizing, and cleaning.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks such as walking, climbing stairs, standing and sitting for long periods, working in elevated areas, repetitive movements, and repetitive lifting of up to 60 pounds.
  • Support box wash operations, particularly on third shift, including washing and inspecting pro boxes to ensure they are clean and free of debris.
  • Handle seed safely and accurately, including labeling, tagging, bagging, re-bagging, and palletizing seed according to specifications.
  • Enter and maintain accurate inventory information in computer systems and stage seed in the warehouse for shipment.
  • Inspect and maintain seed crops in the field during appropriate seasons, supporting seed inventory management and crop quality.
  • Participate in harvesting and seed packaging activities during the busy fall season.
  • Support winter operations by cleaning, packaging seed, assisting with maintenance work, warehousing, and shipping seed to customers.
  • Distinguish varieties of seed based on size or color to maintain product integrity and quality.
  • Perform general housekeeping responsibilities, including sweeping, dusting, washing equipment and harvest boxes, and keeping work areas clean and safe.
  • Follow all safety standards, use required personal protective equipment, and initiate and follow emergency procedures when necessary.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team, adjusting to changing conditions and anticipating operational needs.
  • Participate in daily team meetings and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Work flexible schedules, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, with potential schedules such as 5x8, 4x10, or 3.5 days on / 3.5 days off, and support weekend and overtime work as required.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and a professional attitude, treating all coworkers with respect and contributing to a positive work environment.
Essential Skills
  • Previous experience in manufacturing, production, or farming.
  • Ability to operate or learn to operate production line equipment, general production machinery, packaging equipment, assembly line stations, and related production tools.
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding work, including lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 60 pounds; walking on uneven surfaces; climbing stairs; and working in elevated areas.
  • Comfort working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, mud, dust, and exposure to pollen, insects, and potential bee stings.
  • Ability to speak and read English to follow directions, safety procedures, and production documentation.
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to following safety protocols and using personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to distinguish varieties of seed based on size or color to maintain quality standards.
  • Ability to work long hours and rotational shifts, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with team members and supervisors.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team and to adjust to changing conditions and priorities.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and solve problems on the go while maintaining seed quality and production efficiency.
  • Reliable transportation to the site and ability to arrive at the work location as instructed.
  • Ability to pass a background check and other pre-employment screenings.
  • Ability to use basic computer systems to enter inventory and production information.
  • Steel or composite toe shoes or boots suitable for an industrial/agricultural environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Knowledge of production agriculture and production plant operations.
  • Experience with machine operation, production lines, general production, packaging, assembly line work, and warehousing is beneficial.
  • Comfort and willingness to work in various capacities, including sorting, drying, machine operation, quality control, bagging and re-bagging, palletizing, forklift operation (with provided training), and cleaning tasks.
  • Ability to anticipate operational needs and adjust work priorities accordingly.
  • Enthusiasm, a positive attitude, honesty, and a willingness to treat all colleagues with respect.
  • High school diploma or GED is preferred for contract roles and required to be considered for full-time employment.
  • Willingness to participate fully in training, including classroom presentations and on-the-job training on the production floor.
  • Openness to learning PIT truck (forklift) operation with training provided.

Work Environment

This role is based at an agricultural production site that is physical and fast-paced. You will work in both indoor plant areas and outdoor spaces, often in a dirty or dusty environment despite a strong focus on cleanliness and safety. The work involves exposure to all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, mud, and dust, as well as agricultural allergens such as corn pollen, insects, and potential bee stings. Personal protective equipment is required and provided, including hard hat, safety vest, steel-toed or composite-toe boots, and hearing protection. The facility operates multiple shifts, including 1st shift (typically around 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.), 2nd shift with varying start times (such as 11:00 a.m. or 2:30 p.m.), and 3rd shift (around 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.). Some teams follow a 3.5 days on / 3.5 days off schedule with 12-hour shifts (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.), and box wash operations are primarily on third shift (10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.). The standard workweek is about 40 hours with frequent overtime and weekend work, and you will participate in an initial training period on first shift that combines classroom instruction with hands-on training on the production floor. A clean, safety-focused culture supports the use of PPE and adherence to procedures while you perform strenuous, hands-on work throughout the facility.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.50 - $20.50/hr.
