Job Description

The Production Assistant supports the efficient operation of a high-volume filling and packaging line in a manufacturing environment. This role focuses on assisting with equipment operation, packaging finished products to meet customer orders, and maintaining a clean, safe, and audit-ready work area in accordance with established policies, procedures, and food safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in operating filling line equipment and packaging machinery to complete products according to customer orders and production schedules.
  • Perform general visual inspections of products during operation to identify defects or irregularities and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Package finished products by assembling corrugated boxes and partitions, packing finished products into boxes, sealing cases manually, labeling or stenciling cases with proper identification, and placing finished cases on pallets using pre-determined case placements, spending approximately 40% of the workday on these activities.
  • Make minor machine adjustments as needed to maintain smooth and efficient operation of packaging and filling equipment.
  • Monitor product cases to ensure proper weight, correct packaging components, and accurate operation of machinery, including watching for film splices, breakage, and machinery jams, and promptly report issues to the service machine operator.
  • Prepare the work area for production at the start of the shift and maintain a clean, orderly, and safe environment throughout the workday.
  • Place damaged product packages into appropriate containers and properly discard trash and waste materials.
  • Start and stop assigned production equipment during the shift in accordance with operating procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports on products, including brand, type, and quantity produced.
  • Support the SQF Program and promote food safety by following good manufacturing practices, maintaining housekeeping standards, and contributing to an audit-ready department.
  • Follow all safety, quality, and production procedures and participate in continuous improvement efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production goals and overall plant operations.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to read and write clearly to complete various production reports and documentation.
  • Ability to use sound judgment to monitor product quality and identify issues during production.
  • Ability to understand and follow standard instructions, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with others in a team-oriented production environment.
  • Manual dexterity, physical strength, and stamina to stand for an 8-hour shift.
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds on a regular basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis, with assistance as needed.
  • Capability to perform intermittent sitting, standing, walking, climbing, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling as required by the job.
  • Physical strength and dexterity sufficient to operate equipment, handle materials, and perform all required tasks safely.
  • Willingness and ability to work until production is complete, which may extend beyond scheduled shift hours.
  • Experience or aptitude in production, general labor, packaging, labeling, warehouse, or packing environments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with manufacturing or food production environments and related safety and quality standards.
  • Comfort working with automated or semi-automated filling and packaging equipment.
  • Attention to detail in monitoring product weight, packaging accuracy, and labeling requirements.
  • Reliability and strong work ethic to support consistent production output.
  • Willingness to support food safety initiatives and SQF or similar quality programs.
  • Ability to adapt to changing production priorities and perform a variety of tasks as needed.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $16.87 - $18.87/hr.
