Product Definition Engineer
Job Description
The Product Definition Engineer serves as a key member of the Configuration Management team, responsible for managing the lifecycle of objects within the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. This role ensures that all PLM objects are correctly created, structured, and linked to the overall product configuration, and that they comply with all applicable policies, procedures, and configuration management requirements. The position focuses heavily on creating and maintaining product structures and associated documentation in PLM, while collaborating closely with engineering and other cross-functional teams to support the standardization and development of complex plant systems, including next-generation nuclear reactor technology.
Responsibilities
- Become a subject matter expert on the plant product structure within the PLM system, including top-level plant structures down through subsystems and components.
- Create and maintain part records, specifications, design basis documents, reference documents, and other related objects in the PLM system.
- Ensure newly created PLM objects link correctly to the overall product structure and bill of materials (BOM) before release.
- Work closely with engineers to define, capture, and validate all necessary attributes for PLM objects, including parts, drawings, and design records.
- Create and manage Change Actions in the PLM system to release objects and implement configuration changes in a controlled manner.
- Maintain standard design product structures as well as project-specific product structures in the PLM system to support plant standardization.
- Perform Responsible Configuration Management (RCM) reviews of technical documentation to ensure all configuration management requirements are met prior to submittal.
- Coordinate configuration management activities with internal stakeholders such as engineering teams, project management, sourcing, quality, and regulatory affairs.
- Collaborate with external organizations including partner entities, suppliers, and regulators as needed to support configuration management and product definition activities.
- Develop in-depth knowledge of configuration management processes, procedures, and tools within the assigned area of responsibility.
- Support quality requirements by participating in design reviews and by initiating or responding to corrective actions related to configuration or documentation issues.
- Assist engineering teams with revisions, change controls, and restructuring of PLM objects, including moving and reorganizing items within the PLM system.
- Contribute to the cleanup and preparation of existing data in the current PLM system (such as Enovia) in anticipation of migration to a new PLM platform (such as Teamcenter).
- Support the migration of parts, specifications, design basis records, and reference documents from the current PLM system to the new PLM system.
- Help build and support a growing team focused on product structure standardization for complex plant systems, including nuclear island, turbine island, and supporting subsystems.
- Use communication and office productivity tools to document work, share information, and collaborate effectively in a remote, cross-functional environment.
Essential Skills
- Associate’s degree in engineering, business, data, or a closely related field.
- 1–5 years of experience working with PLM software, creating objects and building BOM structures in any PLM system.
- 1–3 years of experience in configuration management, BOM management, or product structure management.
- 1–3 years of experience using Enovia PLM or equivalent PLM software.
- Hands-on experience creating and managing PLM objects such as change actions, design basis records, supplemental documents, part numbers, and drawing numbers.
- Experience building and maintaining BOM structures and product configurations within a PLM environment.
- Prior experience interfacing with a manufacturing or engineering environment through PLM, preferably in a build-to-order context (for example, aerospace, defense, gas turbines, oil and gas, chemical plants, or EPC-type projects).
- Ability to communicate and interface effectively with large, interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams.
- Strong understanding of configuration management principles and practices.
- Proficiency with engineering documentation, including engineering documents, design records, and asset-related records.
- Ability to manage change requests and data changes within a structured configuration management framework.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to take ownership of tasks and deliver results within agreed schedules.
- Proven ability to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced, matrixed environment with multiple assignments and priorities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- CM certification such as CMII, CMPIC, or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Experience in roles that interface with customers, regulators, and suppliers.
- Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations related to nuclear power plants is a plus.
- Self-starter with a positive, proactive, and inclusive approach to teamwork.
- Track record of delivering on commitments and supporting quality and compliance objectives.
- Ability to quickly learn and navigate diverse organizational interfaces with professional astuteness and agility.
- Experience using communication and office productivity tools such as Microsoft Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Understanding of design engineering processes and their relationship to configuration and document management.
- Experience with engineering lifecycle management, including engineering change management and document management.
- Experience with PLM platforms such as Teamcenter or Windchill is a strong advantage.
- Background in industries such as aerospace, defense, gas turbines, oil and gas, chemical plants, or other complex engineered systems is beneficial.
- Experience working in or with EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) organizations is a plus.
