Role Overview

The Principal Electrical Engineer – Power Systems is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the design and delivery of large-scale electrical infrastructure solutions across industrial and mission-critical environments.

This is a hands-on, subject matter expert (SME) position, focused on solving complex engineering challenges, defining system architecture, and providing technical leadership across multiple high-value projects. The role does not include direct people management but requires mentoring and elevating engineering standards across the team.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & System Design

  • Lead end-to-end design of MV/LV electrical power systems for industrial and mission-critical projects
  • Own and define system architecture, including:
  • Medium- and low-voltage distribution systems
  • Substations and grid interfaces
  • Backup power systems (generators, UPS)
  • Act as the technical authority on complex, high-value projects
  • Establish engineering approaches, standards, and best practices

Engineering Delivery

  • Develop and review detailed engineering deliverables, including:
  • Single-line diagrams
  • Protection and coordination studies
  • Electrical schematics
  • Equipment layouts
  • Oversee technical quality and consistency across multiple projects
  • Ensure designs meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements

Project & Customer Engagement

  • Partner directly with customers to develop robust, scalable power solutions
  • Provide expert input during early-stage concept and design phases
  • Support technically complex bids and proposals
  • Contribute to successful project delivery across multiple concurrent projects (typically 10–15+)

Mentorship & Capability Building

  • Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance across the team
  • Support development of engineering capability and technical excellence
  • Promote best practices in power system design and analysis

Key Accountabilities (Success Measures)

  • Deliver technically robust, scalable, and high-quality power system designs
  • Act as the go-to technical expert for complex engineering challenges
  • Influence project success through strong technical leadership and decision-making
  • Build trusted relationships with customers and internal stakeholders
  • Elevate engineering standards and capability across the organisation

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • 15–20+ years of experience in electrical engineering
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Deep expertise in industrial power systems (“big wires”)
  • Extensive experience with:
  • MV/LV power distribution systems
  • Substations, transformers, and switchgear
  • Backup power systems (generators, UPS)
  • Protection and coordination studies
  • Strong background in:
  • Industrial
  • Utility
  • Data centre
  • Large-scale infrastructure projects
  • Proven ability to lead complex system design independently
  • Strong communication skills with experience working directly with customers

Desirable

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (highly preferred)
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or related field
  • Experience with SEL relay systems
  • Background working within industrial engineering or EPC firms
