DEFINITION

Under direction of the Police Chief and Police Captain, the Sergeant serves as a First-Line Supervisor. The Sergeant is responsible for overseeing law enforcement and patrol duties during designated shifts. A Sergeants area of responsibility extends beyond field supervision to include enforcement of departmental rules, fostering discipline, resolving subordinate issues, and conducting team performance evaluations. This role requires a balance of field and office tasks. Public engagement is a key element, compels strong interpersonal skills and emotional resilience. Adaptability to rotational scheduling and a variety of collateral duties underlines the need for flexibility and versatility.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Completion of an accredited police academy and three years as a sworn law enforcement officer
  • Some college level course work in criminal justice or a related field and/or prior police supervisory experience is desirable but not required. 

License/Certificate

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory record
  • Graduate from accredited Basic P.O.S.T Academy
  • Title 22 CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • Possession of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory certificate and/or graduation from the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute is d
