The Lino Lakes Police Department is seeking lateral police officer candidates who are committed to making a real impact in a growing community and want to be part of a strong and dedicated team of professionals.

Lateral candidates with 3 or more years or experience will be paid $2,500 upon start and $2,500 upon completion of training. An abbreviated training timeline and a higher starting pay scale may be considered for lateral transfers depending upon experience and qualifications. Lateral candidates with 1 to 3 years of experience will be paid $1,250 upon start of employment plus an additional $1,250 upon the completion of training. All candidates will receive 20 hours of sick, and 20 hours of vacation time front loaded into their leave banks. Salary range is $93,080 - $113,900.

Officers have opportunities to become a school resource officer, investigator, SWAT operator, SWAT negotiator, drone pilot, K9 handler, and mobile field force members. Officers’ workdays consist of a balance of responding to calls, engaging in proactive policing efforts, and community engagement.

Minimum qualifications:MN POST Board licensed or eligible to be licensed by June 30, 2026; two-year degree in law enforcement; valid MN Class D driver’s license.
Desired qualifications: Two or more years of experience with a law enforcement agency; bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science, or related field.

POSITION SUMMARY
The primary objectives of this position are to promote public safety, to protect life and property, and to enforce laws and ordinances in a manner that commands public respect and confidence at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Enforces the law; patrols in squads or by other means suitable to the task; apprehends, arrests and books individuals as needed for violations of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; issues citations and warnings to persons violating laws or ordinances; responds to calls of criminal activity and assists citizens whenever possible; maintains public order and peace.
  2. Completes daily logs and police reports; handles follow-ups and investigations and other assignments in a concise and complete manner so that a proper record is assured; collects and preserves evidence.
  3. Deals with situations involving extensive interpersonal conflict (e.g. domestic disturbances, irate citizens, hostile groups); handles telephone or in-person complaints and inquiries in a respectful manner.
  4. Performs residential and business security surveys.
  5. Serves warrants or subpoenas as assigned; testifies at trials, hearings, or grand juries.
  6. May be periodically assigned special duties, including investigation, school resource officer, police training officer, and others; directs traffic to relieve congestion when needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  1. Ability to make decisions with limited information in rapidly evolving situations, to take command of critical or emergency situations, to remain composed under emotional stress, and to avoid inappropriate risks.
  2. Knowledge of police policies and procedures, including rules of evidence, arrest, and search and seizure to assure admissibility of evidence in court and to ensure proper procedures are followed.
  3. Knowledge of state and federal constitutional law, state statutes, and city ordinances. Knowledge of the functions and jurisdictions of county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  4. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with offenders, co-workers,supervisors, and a diverse public to consistently present a positive image and ensure trust of the police department; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  5. Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and to prepare work reports.
  6. Ability to effectively communicate in English on a daily basis.
  7. Ability to effectively use firearms, radios, radar, and other types of police equipment available throughout the department in a safe and skilled manner.
  8. Knowledge of computers and hardware in order to produce reports; ability to run programs in squad cars.
  9. Ability to demonstrate by example the desired standard of the department for personal appearance and conduct.
  10. Ability to administeremergency medical care under stress and in critical events.

While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to drive a vehicle, walk, speak intelligibly, hear, stand, frequently sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, firmly grasp, reach with hands and arms, push, pull, twist, lift, and perform repetitive motions. Requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and tasting or smelling. This work requires the regular exertion of up to 25 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of more than 100 pounds of force. Occasionally required to lift/drag victims. This position work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities.

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time; manual dexterity; adequate hearing, vision, and speech; required to operate assigned vehicle in routine and emergency response situations.
Must also be physically capable of completing a physical ability test on an ongoing basis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold or high temperatures that may cause marked bodily discomfort or reactions. Exposure to blood borne pathogens, and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Occasionally requires working in high, precarious places. Exposure to hazardous conditions and life threatening situations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
Must be able to work shift work. Will periodically be required to attend meetings or court outside of regular work hours.
