Plant Mechanic:
The Plant Mechanic performs mechanical work of a skilled nature in the installation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment equipment and machinery. Maintains logs and records of preventive maintenance and repair work performed, and of supplies and materials requisitioned and consumed. Works in conjunction with the Chief Plant Operator and Plant Operators in the continued operational success of the plants. This position works independently under the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent.
  • Repair, troubleshoot, and complete preventive maintenance and emergency repair tasks for pumps, motors, and other wastewater treatment plant equipment.
  • Works closely with Chief Plant Operator in order to determine upcoming maintenance tasks, projects, and concerns.
  • Works closely with Treatment Plant Operators to ensure maintenance and repair needs are met.
  • Assists in the installation and startup of new equipment.
  • Ensures trucks, tools, and equipment are kept clean and ready for use, and the truck is stocked with items needed to perform daily assignments.
  • May be required to work weekends and holidays if needed.
  • May be required to participate in on-call rotation for response to after-hour calls.
  • Maintains detailed records of repair and maintenance tasks.
  • Works with vendors, facility staff, and the Wastewater Superintendent in the process of procuring new equipment and refurbishment of current equipment.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or GED required.

Must have at least 5 years of experience in general mechanical work.

5 years or more experience in the maintenance of pumps, motors, and other plant equipment is preferred.

Must have dependable safety and work record.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License or must obtain within 18 months of hire
  • Wastewater Collections or Distribution licenses are not required but are preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Skill to read and follow the procedures outlined in the operation and maintenance manuals for diagnosing various equipment problems.

Skill to initiate and communicate with equipment manufacturers to resolve any equipment-related problems.

Skill to read and interpret plant equipment and piping installation drawings.

Ability to efficiently handle emergencies and multiple tasks simultaneously.

Will be required to work in adverse weather conditions to restore water/wastewater equipment during emergencies.

May require announced or unannounced overtime work, and the ability to respond to call-out during non-working hours or emergencies.

Skill in the operation of test equipment and various hand tools.
