Indian River County
This position performs work reviewing applications and permits and answering basic zoning, building, or planning questions. This requires considerable tact and courtesy and independent judgment when assisting customers, as well as initiative to learn and provides assistance within the framework of established administrative principles, policies, practices, and regulations. It is essential to use considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with applicants and the public. Depending on the area of assignment, may be required to process payments by cash, check or credit card following established payment handling procedures. Works under the general direction of the immediate supervisor.
- Performs various complex clerical and administrative tasks, including operating general office equipment such as computers & associated peripherals, copy machines, scanners, and voice recording equipment.
- Reviews and processes site plans and building permits for compliance with land development regulations.
- Ability to maintain and update logs, files, and records with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to prepare correspondence and reports.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to research documents.
- Performs other related duties and tasks as necessary or as assigned.
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years of planning or zoning experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of formal education and related applicable working experience.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to easily use Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge and practice of organizational and time management skills.
- Knowledge of planning, development, and analysis of technical plans (e.g. setbacks, building coverage, etc.)
- Ability to use a personal computer and various computer programs.
- Ability to learn new software programs.
- Ability to exercise analytical judgment in areas of responsibility. Identifies problems or situations as they occur and specifies decision objectives. Identifies or assists in identifying alternative solutions to problems or situations. Implements decisions in accordance with prescribed and effective policies and procedures and with a minimum of errors. Seeks expert or experienced advice and researches problems, situations, and alternatives before exercising judgment.
- Ability to understand and interpret complex oral and written instructions, documents, and programs.
- Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Establish priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time management methodology. Attends meetings, planning sessions, and discussions on time. Implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules. Maintains a calendar for meetings, deadlines, and events.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to accept supervisory instruction and direction and strives to meet the goals and objectives of the same. Questions such as instruction and direction when clarification of results or consequences are justified, i.e., poor communications, variance with policy or procedures, etc. Offers suggestions and recommendations to encourage and improve cooperation between all staff persons and departments within the department.
- Ability to interact effectively and tactfully with the public and staff and to establish working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to maintain an enthusiastic, self-reliant, and self-starting approach to meet job responsibilities and accountability. Strives to anticipate work to be done and initiates proper and acceptable direction for completion of work with a minimum of supervision and instruction.

Work is mainly conducted in an office setting and involves interacting with customers.
