Job Description

This phlebotomist role focuses on collecting high-quality specimens from patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on pediatric and inpatient hospital populations. The position involves performing blood collection through venipuncture and capillary techniques, packaging and processing specimens for laboratory testing, and supporting additional laboratory procedures as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates strong technical skills, a solid understanding of compliance and safety, and the ability to support and train other patient service technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients across all age groups, including infants, neonates, pediatric patients, and adults.
  • Conduct pediatric and infant blood draws with a focus on accuracy, safety, and patient comfort.
  • Handle difficult blood draws, including patients located in medical office buildings and other challenging settings.
  • Review test orders carefully to ensure accuracy and completeness before specimen collection.
  • Draw and label blood samples according to established laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements.
  • Package, process, and prepare specimens and samples for laboratory testing, following proper handling, storage, and transport procedures.
  • Apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety regulations in all aspects of specimen collection and processing.
  • Provide orientation and on-the-job training to patient service technicians and support staff as directed.
  • Manage workload efficiently in an inpatient hospital setting, including the ability to draw 20–30 patients within a shift.
  • Deliver professional, courteous customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • Work a flexible schedule, including PM, overnight (NOC), and potentially AM shifts, as part of a float pool covering PTO, leave, and varying facility needs.
  • Participate in training periods with full-time hours to become acclimated to the facility, workflows, and systems.
  • Collaborate with the lab supervisor, team lead, and other laboratory personnel to maintain smooth operations and high-quality patient care.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute hospital setting, with a preference for at least one year of experience.
  • Ability to perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary technique on patients of all ages, including infants, neonates, and pediatric patients.
  • Experience with pediatric and infant/neonatal blood draws.
  • Inpatient (hospital) setting experience with the ability to draw 20–30 patients within a shift.
  • Comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards related to phlebotomy and laboratory practices.
  • Ability to explain and reinforce compliance and safety requirements to other staff members.
  • High school diploma (HS Diploma).
  • Current CPT-1 license.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and familiarity with at least one laboratory information system (such as Cerner or similar).
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with patients and clinical staff.
  • Open availability, including willingness to work PM and overnight shifts, and potentially AM shifts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a blood bank environment is highly beneficial.
  • Previous experience in a registry or float pool environment is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide orientation and training to patient service technicians.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, processing, and documentation.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different units, workflows, and patient populations within a hospital.
  • Effective communication skills for working with a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Comfort working independently under the supervision of a lab supervisor and team lead.

Work Environment

This position is based in an inpatient hospital setting and functions as part of a registry float pool that provides coverage for PTO, leave of absence, and varying staffing needs. Phlebotomists may work AM, PM, and overnight (NOC) shifts, with open float positions that are scheduled as needed and some assignments that may provide approximately 40 hours per week for several weeks before transitioning back to float coverage. The schedule is planned approximately four weeks in advance. The role involves working under the supervision of a lab supervisor and team lead, with full-time training hours provided initially to help you become acclimated to the facility, workflows, and systems. You will work with pediatric, neonatal, and adult inpatient populations, frequently moving between units and handling a high volume of blood draws. The laboratory uses computer-based lab systems, such as Cerner or similar, as well as analyzers and blood bank equipment, and requires adherence to strict quality control and safety protocols. Training may include day-shift hours (such as 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. starts) and may involve learning specimen processing and NOC procedures. The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and focused on accurate, timely, and compassionate patient care.

This is a Contract position based out of San Bernardino, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
