Job Description

The Phlebotomist collects and processes blood and other specimens from patients of all age groups, with a strong focus on pediatric and inpatient hospital populations. This role supports a busy laboratory by performing venipuncture and capillary collections, preparing and packaging specimens for testing, assisting with additional lab procedures as needed, and ensuring strict adherence to safety and compliance standards. The position offers the opportunity to work in a float pool environment, covering various shifts and units, and to support high-quality patient care in an acute or sub-acute setting.

Responsibilities

• Collect blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary techniques from patients of all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
• Perform pediatric blood collections, including infant and neonatal draws, in a safe, accurate, and compassionate manner.
• Handle difficult blood draws, including patients in medical office buildings and inpatient hospital settings.
• Review test orders carefully to confirm accuracy, completeness, and appropriate specimen requirements.
• Draw and label samples according to laboratory protocols and regulatory requirements.
• Process specimens for laboratory testing, including proper packaging, handling, and routing to the appropriate laboratory areas.
• Assist with other laboratory procedures as needed, including basic processing tasks and support for lab testing workflows.
• Apply a comprehensive understanding of compliance and safety standards in all phlebotomy and specimen-handling activities.
• Effectively communicate the importance of safety, quality, and compliance to colleagues and support a culture of adherence to policies.
• Work collaboratively under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead, especially when working with pediatric patients.
• Utilize laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar) to enter, track, and verify specimen and test information.
• Manage time efficiently to draw 20–30 patients per shift in an inpatient hospital setting, maintaining accuracy and patient comfort.
• Deliver professional, courteous customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
• Maintain accurate documentation and records related to phlebotomy procedures, specimen collection, and processing.
• Participate in training and orientation periods to become fully acclimated to the facility, workflows, and equipment.
• Adapt to a float pool schedule by covering various shifts, units, and assignments as needed, including coverage for PTO and leaves.

Essential Skills

• At least 6 months of experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for 1 year of experience.
• Demonstrated experience with pediatric patients, including infant draw and neonatal experience.
• Ability to perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques across all age groups.
• Proficiency in pediatric blood collections and difficult blood draws.
• Experience in an inpatient (hospital) setting with the ability to draw 20–30 patients within a shift.
• Ability to communicate safety and compliance expectations clearly to other employees.
• Skill in providing orientation and training to patient service technicians.
• High school diploma (HS Diploma) or equivalent.
• Current CPT 1 License.
• Strong computer skills with experience using a laboratory information system, such as Cerner or a similar platform.
• Solid customer service skills and a patient-centered approach.
• Ability to troubleshoot analyzers within the laboratory environment.
• Open availability to work various shifts, including PM and overnight shifts, with flexibility for AM shifts as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Hospital experience is highly preferred and considered a strong advantage.
• Previous experience in a registry or float pool setting is beneficial.
• Demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to different units, workflows, and patient populations.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen labeling, handling, and documentation.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with supervisors, team leads, and clinical staff.
• Ability to remain calm and professional in a fast-paced, high-volume hospital environment.
• Willingness to assist with specimen processing and other lab-related tasks beyond phlebotomy when needed.

Work Environment

This role is based in a hospital environment, primarily in an inpatient setting that includes acute and sub-acute units and pediatric areas. The position is part of a registry float pool designed to provide coverage for paid time off and leaves of absence across multiple shifts and departments. Shifts include AM, PM, and NOC (overnight), with several openings designated as true float roles that are scheduled as needed. Some PM and NOC positions are expected to receive approximately 40 hours per week for several weeks while covering leaves, then transition to float coverage. The schedule is planned approximately four weeks in advance, providing visibility into upcoming assignments. Training consists of full-time hours initially to help the phlebotomist become acclimated to the facility, workflows, and systems, including potential training on NOC shifts. Training may start around 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. and can include support with specimen processing. The work involves frequent interaction with pediatric and adult patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel, using laboratory information systems such as Cerner and working with analyzers, blood bank equipment, and standard phlebotomy tools. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with an emphasis on safety, quality, and teamwork. Dress code typically follows standard clinical and laboratory attire appropriate for a hospital setting, including adherence to safety and infection control guidelines.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $26.00/hr.
