Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The Phlebotomist II supports a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment by performing high-volume blood draws and specimen collection, ensuring accurate labeling and processing, and maintaining strict compliance with safety and quality standards. This role also assists with troubleshooting, participates in training, and recommends workflow improvements to support efficient patient care.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high degree of accuracy and patient care.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy prior to processing.
- Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature control and use of appropriate collection containers and tubes.
- Update and maintain patient information accurately in electronic medical records (EMRs) and related systems.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
- Attend and participate in required annual department trainings and continuing education sessions.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory result information to satisfy appropriate inquiries, following all privacy and confidentiality guidelines.
- Assist with troubleshooting specimen or workflow issues and make recommendations to improve work processes and efficiency.
- Support training activities by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures as needed.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or related healthcare setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draw techniques, including knowledge of different needle gauges and phlebotomy methods.
- Ability to accurately enter and update data in various electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Strong specimen collection skills, including venipuncture and handling of multiple specimen types.
- Excellent customer service skills to effectively support a high volume of patients each day.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions, and adherence to test order requirements.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations relevant to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with a high daily patient volume, similar to an emergency room setting.
- Experience as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Assistant with hands-on phlebotomy experience.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and quality.
- Strong verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures and answer patient questions.
- Demonstrated reliability and professionalism in a clinical or laboratory environment.
- Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative clinical team.
Work Environment
This position is based in a fast-paced clinical facility structured similarly to an emergency room, with more than 100 patients passing through daily. The role involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, high-volume specimen collection, and use of electronic medical record systems and standard office software. Work hours follow daytime shifts, typically Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. required. The environment emphasizes efficiency, accuracy, and strong patient service, with adherence to all laboratory safety, infection control, and regulatory standards.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
