Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description

The primary role of the phlebotomist is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements. The phlebotomist is responsible for collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures while maintaining high standards of patient care and specimen integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, and centrifuge specimens as needed.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures.
  • Update patient information accurately.
  • Explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Ensure full understanding of physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens according to test orders.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and store samples according to required temperatures.
  • Place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes and accurately label them.
  • Follow specific procedures outlined by protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
  • Phlebotomy skills including blood draw and venipuncture.
  • Patient care skills.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, if required.
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of experience in phlebotomy, medical, pediatric, geriatrics, or health care settings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience in drawing blood and blood drawing techniques.
Work Environment

The work environment is a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, requiring compliance with safety regulations such as OSHA and DEP. The phlebotomist will participate in annual department trainings and is expected to maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with patients and handling specimens.

This is a Contract position based out of Gastonia, NC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.50/hr.
