Job Description

The primary role of the Phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshoot, provide training, and make workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and label specimens accurately.
  • Centrifuge specimens and record maintenance data.
  • Decontaminate work areas and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight and butterfly needles.
  • Understand and execute all physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and in appropriate containers.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in phlebotomy and specimen handling.
  • Experience with blood draw and labeling.
  • Knowledge of sample preparation, specimen management, and storage.
  • Familiarity with laboratory and blood bank operations.
  • Medical assisting skills, including using a centrifuge.
  • Ability to perform venipunctures and manage patient specimens.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent customer service skills.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED completion.
  • Phlebotomy certification is not required.
  • At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
  • Preference for pediatric experience.
  • Potential to float to multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) and In-Office Phlebotomies (IOPs) in the Fort Wayne area.
  • Preference for candidates with 2 years of experience.

Work Environment

The position operates on a Monday through Friday schedule, with hours varying between 6am and 6pm. Some workers may be stationary, while others might float between locations. Training will take place in Fort Wayne. This role offers the potential for temporary to permanent employment

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
