Position summary:

The Pharmacy Technician prepares all medications, (unit dose and IV compounded products) for pharmacist check and ensures delivery to nursing unit for patient administration, refills pyxis units, prepares all floor stock requests, maintains the department’s inventory in a clean and orderly condition, requisitions supplies, processes departmental paperwork, and triages phone calls.

Shift: Rotating, 8-hour shifts

What you will do:

  • Prepares intravenous solutions following the rules and regulations outlined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy (IBP), USP 797, USP 800 as relevant, along with proper aseptic technique throughout the compounding preparation process.
  • Follows regulations as outlined in USP 795.
  • Accurately prepares unit dose medications for final verification by the pharmacist.
  • Accurately fills floor stock medication requests.
  • Packages/Repackages medications utilizing blister packs and proper labeling requirements.
  • Performs restocking functions for the crash carts and Thomas packs. J. Utilizes Simplifi797 for required documentation for IV room suite.
  • Follows USP 800 regulations regarding receiving, handling, and transporting hazardous medications.
  • Responsible for removing soon to expire or expired medications when identified within the pharmacy stock while performing daily functions
  • Keeps accurate, up-to-date, and legible records and documentation forms for quality assurance purpose.
  • Performs all IV room compounding testing requirements and maintains passing results.
  • Performs all daily, weekly and monthly cleaning requirements of the compounding room as required by the IBP, USP 797. USP 795, and USP 800 as well as other federal and state regulatory agencies

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required

Registration: Registration with the State of Iowa as a pharmacy technician (or technician trainee if awaiting certification) prior to starting position within the pharmacy. AND Certification: National certification acquired through successful completion of any NCCA accredited pharmacy technician certification program. At least one sitting for examination must be within 9 months of hire, after achieving the required 500 hours to sit for the test. Achievement of certification must be no later than 12 months after hire.

Registration: Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist-Intern per Board of Pharmacy rules: "Pharmacist-intern" or "intern" means a person enrolled in a college of pharmacy or actively pursuing a pharmacy degree, or as otherwise provided by the board, who is registered with the board for the purpose of obtaining instruction in the practice of pharmacy from a preceptor pursuant to Iowa Code section 155A.6. "Pharmacist intern" includes a graduate of an approved college of pharmacy, or a foreign graduate who has established educational equivalency pursuant to the requirements of rule 657- 4.7(155A), who is registered with the board for the purpose of obtaining practical experience as a requirement for licensure as a pharmacist in Iowa. "Pharmacist-intern" may include an individual participating in a residency for fellowship program in Iowa, whether or not the individual is licensed as a pharmacist in another state.
