Position Overview

Slate Asset Management is seeking a talented and experienced Payroll Manager to own and manage its global payroll across all of the firm's office locations. The successful candidate will serve as the firm's subject matter expert on all aspects of payroll, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing across six jurisdictions: the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, and Ireland.

This role partners closely with HR, Finance, Legal, and Tax to maintain compliance with local employment and tax regulations, support employee experience, and drive process improvements across the global payroll function. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Administrative Officer.

Major Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end payroll processing for all employees across the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Norway, and Ireland, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance in each jurisdiction
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all global payroll matters, including escalations, audits, and regulatory inquiries
  • Manage relationships with third-party payroll providers and ensure deliverables are met in accordance with service level agreements
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of payroll legislation, tax regulations, and statutory requirements across all applicable countries, proactively communicating changes and their impact to Finance, HR, and Legal
  • Prepare and review monthly payroll journals and reconciliations for integration into the general ledger, ensuring alignment with the firm's financial reporting
  • Partner with HR on the processing of new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, commissions, and other compensation events, ensuring all changes are reflected accurately and on time
  • Manage payroll-related tax filings and remittances, including federal, state/provincial, and local obligations across all jurisdictions (e.g., W-2s, T4s, P60s, PAYE, Lohnsteuer, and equivalent filings)
  • Ensure compliance with statutory benefit and social contribution requirements across each country, including pension auto-enrollment (UK), social insurance (Ireland), health and social care contributions (Germany and Norway), and applicable US and Canadian equivalents
  • Perform and oversee foreign currency payroll transactions and coordinate with Finance on FX considerations and intercompany recharges
  • Support year-end payroll close processes globally, including reconciliation of payroll tax accounts and coordination with external auditors and tax advisors
  • Maintain payroll records, documentation, and internal controls in accordance with local data privacy regulations, including GDPR requirements applicable to European payrolls
  • Identify and implement opportunities to streamline payroll workflows, improve system integrations, and enhance controls and reporting accuracy
  • Contribute to budgeting and forecasting of compensation-related expenses in partnership with the HR and Finance team
  • Support equity compensation administration (e.g., carried interest, co-investment programs) as it relates to payroll tax withholding and reporting


Qualifications and Experience

  • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field; CPP (Certified Payroll Professional) or equivalent designation preferred
  • 6+ years of progressive payroll experience, with at least 3 years managing multi-country payroll operations
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience processing payroll across multiple jurisdictions, with specific experience in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Norway, and/or Ireland strongly preferred
  • Strong working knowledge of local payroll tax regulations, employment law requirements, and statutory reporting obligations across applicable countries
  • Experience managing third-party payroll vendors and holding providers accountable to service and compliance standards
  • Familiarity with payroll and HRIS platforms (e.g., Dayforce or similar global payroll systems)
  • Solid understanding of payroll accounting, general ledger integration, and month-end close processes
  • Strong Excel proficiency; experience with financial reporting and payroll reconciliation tools
  • Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple payroll cycles and deadlines simultaneously across time zones
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with HR, Finance, Tax, and Legal teams globally
  • Strong understanding of GDPR and data privacy obligations as they relate to employee payroll data
  • Experience in a fast-paced, transaction-driven environment, ideally within financial services, private equity, real estate, or asset management
