Patient Care Technician-Cardiology

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care, including assistance with patient procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning.

  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies as directed.

  • Perform UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities, including:

    • Blood glucose monitoring

    • Weights

    • Vital signs

    • Intake & Output

    • Specimen collection

    • Foley catheter care

    • Telemetry monitor application/reapplication

    • Hospital-acquired condition & patient safety indicator tasks

    • Simple dressings

    • Placement and removal of restraints

    • Bladder scans

    • “Ticket to Ride” intra-hospital patient transport

  • Perform at least four BU‑identified clinical tasks: phlebotomy, 12‑lead EKG, simple dressing changes, Foley catheter removal, point‑of‑care testing, bladder scanning, straight catheterization, or IV catheter removal.

  • Report changes in patient status and provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care.

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with all members of the healthcare team and other departments.

  • Contribute to unit operations by responding to call lights and telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.

  • Ensure equipment malfunctions are promptly reported to the appropriate department.

  • Provide patient and family instruction under the direction of the RN.

  • Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per physician order or hospital protocol.

  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions.

  • Support a safe workplace environment for patients, colleagues, and self.

  • Maintain productive working relationships by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patient care.

  • Adhere strictly to all hospital policies, procedures, and safety standards, including standard precautions.

  • Participate in department-based projects, quality initiatives, and process improvements.

  • Receive feedback constructively and identify learning needs; seek assistance with planning and prioritizing work as needed.

  • Complete documentation in the medical record according to established procedures.

  • Perform clerical duties as assigned and complete work in a timely and productive manner.

  • Maintain competency in required standard skills and achieve/maintain competency in at least one advanced skill based on departmental need, including:

    • Phlebotomy/venipuncture

    • Peripheral IV removal

    • Indwelling Foley catheter removal

    • Basic arrhythmia

    • 12‑lead EKG

    • NG tube clamping and removal

  • Access to medications is limited to distribution of medications to the nurse.

Schedule Requirements
  • Two 12‑hour shifts weekly

  • Rotating shifts: 6:00 a.m.–6:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m.

  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 6‑week schedule

  • Night requirement: 3-night shifts per 6‑week schedule

  • Position can be upgraded to a Sr Patient Care Technician or Specialist based on experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Must meet one of the following:

    • 1 year of general healthcare experience, or

    • 6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion (for those with <1 year of experience), or

    • Enrollment in a PT/OT/PA or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, or

    • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

  • Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class.

  • Successful completion of eRecord training.

  • EMT or Paramedic certification — or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program — preferred.

  • At least 1 year of acute care experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required within 30 days of hire (AHA standards including didactic and skills demonstration).

  • ACLS preferred.

  • Act 34 Clearance required.
