The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Part Time - General Maintenance Workerfor the Public WorksDepartment Grounds & Easement Maintenance Division. The Town of Clayton employs more than 340 full-time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. The Town of Clayton also offers a range of PT positions including positions in Parks & Rec, Library, and Cultural Arts.

An employee in this class performs a wide range of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of Town facilities, cemeteries, grounds, public spaces, greenways and rights-of-way. Responsibilities include landscape installation and maintenance; fence and minor structural repairs, irrigation and watering; operation of equipment such as mowers, hand and power tools; pesticide application; as well as general grounds and facility maintenance. This position supports the overall appearance, safety, and functionality of Town properties by responding to routine maintenance needs and assisting with special projects as assigned. Work may involve both independent tasks and team-based assignments across multiple departments. Employees must consistently follow established safety procedures to prevent injury to themselves and others. This role requires working in indoor and outdoor environments under varying weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and may involve exposure to hazards such as chemicals, moving mechanical parts, noise, oils, and other environmental factors. Compliance with applicable safety regulations, including OSHA standards, is required. Work is performed under regular supervision and is reviewed during progress and upon completion to ensure adherence to proper work methods, safety standards, and quality expectations.
  • Maintains the exterior of Town buildings and public spaces by applying herbicides, blowing, edging sidewalks, maintaining landscaped areas, mowing, pressure washing, removing trash, and tree/shrub maintenance
  • Performs a variety of landscape maintenance tasks, including fertilization, mulching, plant care and installation, turf management, and watering.
  • Conducts regular tree care and maintenance including general debris cleanup, pruning, trimming and removal,
  • Maintains cemetery grounds and internments
  • Conducts routine equipment inspections and ensures proper cleaning, maintenance, and storage of tools and equipment.
  • Operates trucks and small motorized equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Loads, unloads, and transports materials such as mulch, soil, stone, timber, and equipment.
  • Works as part of a crew to remove litter from public buildings and grounds.
  • Performs minor building maintenance tasks such as basic carpentry, electrical, painting and plumbing; assists skilled staff with more complex repairs.
  • Assists with snow and ice removal by clearing entry ways, sidewalk sand streets
  • Supports Town operation and events by assisting with event setup and breakdown, including installation of holiday decorations and support for Town-sponsored events.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
  • Working knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with grounds maintenance.
  • General knowledge of landscape maintenance procedures.
  • Some knowledge of horticulture design and installations.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment and tools utilized in this section.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees.
  • Ability to use chemicals and pesticides properly in accordance with state law.

Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Vocational or Technical Landscaping and/or Horticulture preferred.
  • Licenses/certification Pesticide, Class “A” CDL to be obtained post hire as determined by Management.
  • Knowledge of landscape maintenance.
